The Hawks take on another sub-300 team

NCAA Basketball: Big Ten Conference Tournament-Iowa vs Indiana Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

After a football Saturday which left a lot to be desired, the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team follow up their win against Chicago State with another home game later today against the Alabama State Hornets.

Much like Chicago State, Bama State is not very good. They went 8-23 last year (6-12 in conference which tied for 8th) and opened this season with a 28-point loss at Mississippi State Bulldogs. KenPom has them rated 338 in the country.

This game is considered a preliminary to the Cayman Island Classics so any concern about its impact on Iowa’s strength of schedule should be directed that way.

A guy to know is Rodney Simeon. In CBS Sports’ rundown of all 351 teams, they note he could be a top-five player in the conference. The guard led the Hornets with 12.2 points a game last year. They return him and another starter. Lewis Jackson, a former Alabama State player, is coaching them for the 11th year.

A couple Iowa thoughts:

  • There’s no word yet on whether Connor McCaffery is good to go. With the next game four days away, I suspect he’ll be held out to heal his foot. I’d expect the PG rotation to look like it did on Friday: heavy dose of Jordan Bohannon in the first half, keep afloat with Brady Ellingson, and then get to garbage time early in the second so the reserves can run the show.
  • Iowa did a good job working inside-out in the half court last game and Alabama State has a smallish roster to continue that against. As the modern philosopher, The Big Aristotle, says, “Get it to the big dog, let him eat.”
