After an easy, peasy, lemon-squeezey, exhibition slate which saw the Hawkeyes cruise to 2-0, they host their first regular season game against the Chicago State Cougars.
They are a not very good basketball team and are rated 334 by KenPom, and not much better by other preseason outlets. The Cougs return seven players (three starters), including their leading scorer Fred Sims Jr., who averaged 18.8 points per contest. Chicago State didn’t get much else scoring last year, as their average of 65.3 points was 329th out of 351 teams.
Their only exhibition was a 35-point loss to Valparaiso.
Tracy Dildy is their coach for an 8th season and has never lead them to more than 13 wins (2013-14). He’s also their interim athletic director!
That’s enough Chicago State talk, here’s what I’ll be looking for out of our Iowa Hawkeyes:
- What does the small forward rotation look like without Nicholas Baer? Jack Nunge really stepped up in the exhibitions, as he averaged 12.5 points off the bench in the two contests. Fran said yesterday, Ahmad Wagner would retain the starting role and Cordell Pemsl would assume Baer’s “sixth man” duties. How does it shake out in execution?
- How does Isaiah Moss look? He’ll play tonight but he missed the second exhibition with a foot/ankle injury. Do we see much Maishe Dailey or does the guard rotation stay within Jordan Bohannon-Connor McCaffery-Moss-Brady Ellingson? Do the two PGs play together in early and/or extended minutes?
- Can the big dogs (Tyler Cook and Luka Garza - 37.5 points and 16 boards/game between the two in exhibitions) continue to eat down low?
