Iowa athletic director Gary Barta is taking a leave of absence from the program as he battles prostate cancer, per Mark Emmert of HawkCentral.
The University of Iowa confirmed to Emmert that Barta will undergo surgery and treatment, and will return to work as his recovery allows.
In 2016, Barta received a contract extension to keep him on campus through 2021.
In April, Barta found himself in hot water over the way he treated former female employees Jane Meyer and Tracey Griesbaum.
