WHERE IN THE WORLD IS FRAN MCCAFFERY: An Iowa Basketball Recruiting Update

We haven’t talked Iowa Basketball ‘croots in a bit. What has been up with Fran and Co. these days on the Oregon-erm-recruiting trail?

Iowa lost to North Dakota State last week. Ok, we got that out of the way. In the roundball world, Coach Fran McCaffery has been pretty busy lately. According to the Twitterverse, he’s kinda been all over. So let’s do a recap shall we?

2018 PF Joey Hauser (Stevens Point, WI)

Hauser, an AAU teammate of current commit Joe Wieskamp, was recently interviewed about his recruitment and dropped a little line about Iowa.

This quote came in between paragraphs about Marquette (where his brother will be playing) and visiting Virginia. As the #34 prospect in the land, Hauser would be right up there with Tyler Cook as the most coveted Fran recruit ever. Competition will be very stiff for his services from most of the big boys, including Michigan State and possibly Duke. Read more here.

2018 SG C.J. Fredrick (Covington Catholic, KY)

First of all, sweet first name and only good things will happen to you, Mr. Fredrick (unless you go to Iowa State).

Interesting to note that Fredrick has a connection to Fran. His uncle actually played under McCaffery while he was an assistant at Notre Dame. Rivals indicates that Iowa is his first high major offer, although 247 lists him as the #1 prospect in Kentucky, which is neat. At only 170 lbs, he’ll need to add some muscle before getting to college, but he’s only a junior so there should be time for that to happen. You can read more about Mr. Fredrick here.

2019 PF Jeremiah Robinson (Roeland Park, KS)

Another Fran offer to another young buck.

Problem here is that Robinson is the #18 rising sophomore in the country and already has Kansas and Oklahoma offers. Can't fault Fran for trying though.

2019 PF Taylor Currie (Worthington, OH)

McCaffery also stopped over in Ohio to check out the exploits of Sophomore-to-be Taylor Currie.

We don’t know a lot about Currie yet, and he doesn’t yet have an offer, but it’s worth noting that coaches from Iowa, Michigan, West Virginia, and Ohio State have all been in to watch him work out recently. Worth keeping an eye on.

2020 C Xavier Foster (Oskaloosa, IA)

You read that right—2020. Foster hasn’t even started his freshman year and he’s already got an offer from the local team.

And as is the case with kids that young, we know very little about Mr. Foster, but we do have some footage of his workout for McCaffery.

Obviously, he has to grow into his body some, but hey he’s 6’10 and move around ok and he’s only a freshman. Clearly, Fran sees something in the local product.
