So You've Signed Marshall Koehn: A New Owner's Guide

Congratulations! You've just made the wonderful decision to sign Marshall Koehn! Like most new Koehn owners, you're no doubt filled with questions about your new family member. We here at BHGP will try our best to answer any questions you might have.

HELLO MIAMI

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT MARSHALL KOEHN?

Koehn is a kicker with a powerful leg -- over 55% of his kickoffs went for touchbacks and in his career he successfully converted 12 of 15 field goals of 40 yards or longer, including 2/2 on 50+ yard field goals. If you need someone to bomb a long field goal, Koehn's a solid bet.

WHAT DID HE DO THAT'S SO GREAT?

Well, in Iowa City we love him a lot for this play:

That play is great because a game-winning field goal is always thrilling, but it also encapsulates Koehn's biggest strengths: his powerful leg and his impressive accuracy from long range. And while it doesn't really matter because he's a kicker, Koehn is a very good athlete -- he ran a 4.6 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, which was the fastest 40-time by a kicker in over a decade. So if you've got any fake field goal plays that you'e been itching to run, well, they might work pretty well.

HIGHLIGHTS:

WHAT ABOUT THE BAD?

Koehn failed to convert six -- six! -- extra points this past season, which is... pretty bad.  A few of those were blocked as a result of good plays by the defense or breakdowns by his blockers, but there were also several extra points that he just flubbed.  There's really no sugarcoating it -- missing that many extra points is very bad. Also, while Koehn's long-distance field-goal kicking was generally very good (see above), he was only 5/9 on kicks from 30-39 yards and he missed a field goal under 30 yards this year as well.  Koehn was not exactly automatic on shorter-distance kicks, which is a bit alarming.

WAS THIS A GOOD SIGNING?

Like most undrafted free agent signing, it's a pretty low-cost and low-risk transaction, so sure.  Koehn has a very powerful leg, which can certainly be a strong asset in the NFL.  If he can improve his accuracy -- especially on middle-distance kicks and extra points -- then he can be a solid kicker at the NFL level.
