Iowa Wrestling at Purdue: The Primer

And just like that, the conference season begins.

Still happy as can be following Kirk and company’s win over Purdue? Want (what should be) more Hawkeye W’s in your life on this post-Thanksgiving weekend? Look no further than the Iowa wrestling team, ladies and gentlemen.

Tom Brands and company are scheduled to take on Purdue Sunday at high noon (God’s time) in West Lafayette to kick off the Big Ten season. We’ll get a glimpse of Iowa’s starting lineup, which will likely feature four redshirt freshmen making their conference debuts — Michael Kemerer, Joey Gunther, Cash Wilcke, and Steven Holloway at 157, 165, 197, and 285, respectively.

To put things bluntly, this should be a bloodbath. Purdue has a total of zero ranked grapplers, with the Hawkeyes having guys in Flowrestling’s rankings at every weight except 141, 165, and 197. Sam Stoll is No. 6 at heavyweight, but will likely sit due to injury.

The Hawks have won 18 consecutive Big Ten openers, and 28 straight against Purdue, so things should go swimmingly. If they don’t, well, sound the alarms.

Coverage, lineups, and loose ends

For the first time this season, you can watch the Hawkeyes on BTN Plus, which requires a subscription if you’re not a student on campus wifi. Otherwise, Steven Grace and Mark Ironside have the call on the Learfield Network.

Live results are available on hawkeyesports.com, and you can follow along on Twitter via the following accounts.
