Both the Iowa men’s and women’s basketball teams suffered their first losses of the season the past week, but luckily it’s a long season and it’s early on and neither loss should matter all that much.
Iowa’s loss to Seton Hall last week wasn’t totally unexpected, but I don’t think anyone really saw the women’s team losing on a buzzer-beater to South Dakota State. Oh well, Bluder’s Bunch is in Cancun right now and I’m willing to bet the team has put the loss behind them already.
The women’s team plays UCLA on Thursday and James Madison the following day as part of the Cancun Challenge. Meanwhile I’m writing this while it’s snowing outside.
Some big news for Peter Jok, who earned B1G Player of the Week honors.
Jok is the leading scorer in the conference with 24.3 points per game through four games. He had a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds in the Seton Hall game. The last time a Hawkeye recorded 30 or more points and 10 or more rebounds in a game was Reggie Evans. This is the second time of his career where he’s earned POTW honors.
Nicholas Baer tops the conference in a key stat as well, averaging 2 blocks per game.
Moving forward, Iowa will have its hands full this week when it plays Virginia Friday, and either Providence or Memphis on Saturday depending how those bouts shake out.
Virginia is a tough, tough test. The Cavaliers earned a No. 1 seed last year and fell to Syracuse in the Elite Eight. We’ll have more on that game for you later in the week, but just know Peter Jok will be hard-pressed to continue his scoring surge against the Cavaliers. Through three games, Virginia is allowing just 40 points to its opponents. I think that’s pretty good.
