Whatcha Drinkin, Who Ya Watchin: Week 8

It’s week 8, the heart of conference football. Lots of decent matchups and anything can happen. Who will you be watching?

Ohio State v Wisconsin

Would you look at that, Iowa is on an official winning streak! And their opponent this week, ranked in the top ten with a worse record and losing conference record is on a losing streak! Not that any of that matters. Wisconsin is a damn good football team, I don’t know that Iowa is and this is conference football - anything can happen.

Things get kicked off this week tonight. In a nice change from last week there are a couple games worth tuning in to. At 6pm CT we get (formerly top ten) Miami at Virginia Tech on ESPN. That’s followed up with BYU at #14 and undefeated Boise State at 9:15 CT, also on ESPN.

Tomorrow night we have a similar setup, albeit with less compelling matchups. At 6 CT you’ve got USF at Temple on ESPN. That’s followed up with Oregon at Cal at 9:30 CT, also on ESPN.

Iowa v Purdue
Good things happen when Desmond King touches the ball. Hopefully he has plenty of opportunities in the punt return game Saturday.

Saturday morning, your beloved Hawkeyes will be hosting the #10 Wisconsin Badgers in the battle for the Heartland Trophy at 11am on ESPN. Not that you’d ever change the channel, but #7 Louisville will be hosting NC State on ABC in that 11am CT time slot. Other viewing options include Indiana at Northwestern on BTN, Texas at K-State on ESPN2 and Rutgers at Minnesota on ESPNU.

The 2:30 time slot appears to have some, uhh, less than compelling matchups. On BTN, you can watch #3 Michigan destroy Illinois at home. #8 Nebraska will undoubtedly leave their starters in for a full 4 quarters at home against Purdue and then puff their chest out about the margin of victory for weeks to come. You can enjoy that on ABC/ESPN2 (side note, who the hell decided Purdue should be on ABC? Ever?). That game is mirrored with #12 West Virginia hosting TCU on ESPN2/ABC. Shockingly, ESPN doesn’t have a 2:30 game to follow Iowa/Wisconsin. But the marquee matchup in that time slot has to be #6 Texas A&M at #1 Alabama on CBS.

The late games get started a little early (and I assume this is why there’s no 2:30 game on ESPN) with #17 Arkansas at #21 Auburn on ESPN at 5pm CT. At 6 you can catch #11 Houston at SMU on ESPN2. Michigan State tries to begin the salvaging of their season at 6:30 on BTN at Maryland.

In prime time, we have #2 OSU at Penn State on ABC at 7 CT. You’ve also got #16 Oklahoma at Texas Tech on FOX. At 8pm CT on ESPN you can watch #23 Ole Miss at #25 LSU. For some reason, there’s no PAC 12 game on a major network late this Saturday. You can get your late night college football fix with Wyoming at Nevada on ESPN2 at 9:30 CT.

Oh yeah, there’s also a baseball game Saturday. I can’t remember who’s playing, but it looks like it’s on FS1 at 7pm. Maybe a few of you will be watching.

Mmmmmm, beeeeeer.

Keeping with the theme that’s worked in back to back weeks, I’m going with some Wisconsin love (or maybe misery drowning?) this Saturday. Gimme some New Glarus Spotted Cow. Thank God for family vacations to the Dells.
