This was supposed to be Jarrod Uthoff's coronation as the savior of Iowa's season, so wonderful was his game-tying three:
Instead, Iowa was lifeless in overtime, missing its first six shots from the field in OT and missing three free throws in the process. Northwestern hit its free throws and gave Iowa its worst loss of the season by far, 66-61. Iowa drops to 16-10, 6-6 on the season, and now the Hawkeyes' tourney hopes are in serious peril.
Aaron White had a horrific day, going 1-12 from the field and frequently getting blocked by Northwestern's big men. The Cats blocked a season-high 12 shots for the game, including five from Alex Olah. Adam Woodbury was also a frequent victim of Northwestern's defense, finishing 0-for-5 from the field (and, troublingly, 3-for-8 at the line).
Iowa got Northwestern into foul trouble early in the second half, forcing six fouls in the first four minutes. The officials swallowed their whistles after that, though, and the next Northwestern foul came in overtime. White would obviously submit that he was fouled plenty in that timeframe without the calls coming, but overall Iowa just wasn't attacking well enough to draw whistles when that should have been a primary strategy.
I don't really know what else to say other than "Iowa should not have lost this game." That's not to say Northwestern didn't earn it, obviously; they did. The Wildcats looked well-coached and motivated, and that's a dangerous combination—particularly when the other team is neither.
