Iowa landed its fourth in-state commitment for the Class of 2017 this weekend when Solon's Jacob Coons announced his decision to play for the Hawkeyes.

Coons is classified as an outside linebacker/tight end/athlete by the scouting services, and received a three-star grade from 247 and Rivals. He's already 6'4 and 215 pounds as a sophomore, so there is room to grow. Solon has used him everywhere from in-line tight end to wide receiver to H-back, as his Hudl video shows. He checks a lot of boxes for Iowa: He's big, he's in-state, and he clearly likes to block.
Coons' commitment gives Iowa verbal pledges from four of the top five players in Rivals' initial in-state rankings. The only holdout, West Des Moines Valley quarterback Rocky Lombardi, doesn't yet hold an Iowa offer but has been to Iowa City. In other words, it could be another banner in-state season for Iowa football. And unlike recent years, this season's haul comes with a bunch of recruiting stars. Obviously, it's early, and verbal commitments are rarely solid, but the 2017 recruiting season looks promising.
