Yesterday was the mini-Copa America quadrant of the World Cup; today is the "wait, those teams are in the knockout rounds?!" quadrant of the Cup. The Netherlands being there isn't that surprising (although they were in a tricky group), but Mexico? Costa Rica? Greece? Yeah, not many folks figured those teams would still be in Brazil at this point and not on vacation somewhere.
Up first is Mexico v. the mighty Dutch. Mexico had their fun in surviving the group stage; now it's time for them to go home. Hopefully the Oranje oblige behind some goals from Van Persie and Robben. The second game features another CONCACAF team, Costa Rica, against the most surprising UEFA team left in the competition, Greece. On paper, this looks like one of the duller games in the competition, but who knows -- this World Cup has defied convention at almost every turn so far.
TODAY'S GAMES:
Mexico v. Netherlands (11 AM CT, ESPN and WatchESPN, Fernando Palomo and Alejandro Moreno)
Costa Rica v. Greece (3 PM CT, ESPN and WatchESPN, Daniel Mann and Kasey Keller)
The usual rules apply.
