IOWA'S LINEBACKER COACHES SPEAK WITH THE MEDIA. It's week two of spring football at Iowa. As usual, Kirk Ferentz allows the media to speak with a different member or members of his coaching staff. This week we hear from LeVar Woods and Jim Reid. They talk recruiting, the loss of James Morris, Christian Kirksey and Anthony Hitchens and expectations for this season's linebackers.

HERE'S VIDEO AND TRANSCRIPTS. Marc Morehouse has video of the entire press conference. I'll share one clip of each, click this link to see the rest. If you don't click, Jim Reid may make you do up-downs.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS, BULLET STYLE:

  • Recruiting Texas and Atlanta is definitely a challenge (ACC, SEC country)
  • Three seniors from last year all have a bright NFL (and beyond) future
  • Woods' NFL ties help recruiting (former players around the game coaching at the high school level)
  • A lot of young guys at linebacker they want to just let loose and play
  • Woods didn't know Reggie Spearman was only 17 until his birthday during fall practice
  • Travis Perry is working on reaction to blocking schemes and pass rush skills
  • Perry reads routes really well
  • Christian Kirksey was a player that only comes around every 10 years or so
  • Woods is learning the recruiting game from Bobby Kennedy and Chris White (two former recruiting coordinators)
  • Iowa hears from recruits they send the best mail
  • Max Allen assists the staff with recruiting media
  • Jim Reid really misses Norm Parker
  • Reid says they don't yet know what they have with Spearman
  • Reid loves Facebook and how he can connect with former players
  • Quinton Alston has a great understanding of the game
  • Linebackers can't be afraid to make mistakes
  • Spearman is in Reid's office so much they call him Reggie Reid
  • John Kenny played outside in high school and they moved him inside, still a learning
  • Chad Gilson is playing well
And there's certainly more. Jim Reid's personality showed up more this year than last. If you attend an Iowa open practice you see an energetic coach and that shines through here. Make sure you read both transcripts or watch the videos.

THE PLAYERS SPOKE TOO. Again, on the On Iowa Blog, Morehouse has video of Mark Weisman, Jake Rudock, Brandon Scherff and Quinton Alston. Rudock took some time on spring break to return to Florida and work with his long-time QB coach, Ken Mastole. Scherff wants to improve and Alston talks about his opportunity as a senior.
