Iowa Hawkeyes Golf: Steven Ihm wins Sunnehanna Amateur

Iowa senior-to-be takes prestigious amateur tournament over the weekend.

Iowa golfer Steven Ihm won the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur this weekend at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, PA. Ihm shot an 8-under 272 over 72 holes to win by two shots over the reigning SEC Player of the Year, Alabama's Cory Whitsett. Ihm shot a 3-under 67 Sunday to cement his victory.

The Sunnehanna is a big deal in amateur golf. The list of past winners includes U.S. Open champions Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson, Masters champions Ben Crenshaw and Tommy Aaron, and touring pros like Ricky Fowler, Billy Andrade, Brad Faxon, John Cook and Scott Verplank. Tiger Woods played the tournament twice but never won. So, yes, Steven Ihm is better than Tiger Woods.

Ihm earned a first-team all-Big Ten spot last season after posting a 72.3 stroke average, and entered the week ranked No. 97 in World Amateur Golf Rating. The Peosta, IA native has a sponsor's exemption to play the John Deere Classic in early July.
