Here's what we know at 4:00 p.m. CT:
(1) Iowa is probably not in the NCAA Tournament. The Bracket Project, which compiles all the projected brackets, has them in just four of 88 projections. If Iowa did improbably make the field, it would almost certainly be in Dayton Tuesday. Nevertheless, the NCAA Selection Show is on CBS starting at 5:00 p.m. CT, and we'll definitively find out then.
(2) Iowa is probably a top 8 seed in the NIT, based on their excellent NIT resume and ability to sell tickets last year (remember, Iowa had more fans at their NIT home game against Dayton than any two other venues had combined). NITology, which had been the source for all NIT projections the last couple of years, has been down all day and might be out of commission. The Bracket Project guys also do the NIT, and have Iowa as a #1 seed, meaning the Hawkeyes would play at home until they lose or make the semifinals in Madison Square Garden. There are eight (or nine, if Middle Tennessee does not make the field) low-major teams with automatic bids into the NIT by virtue of winning their conference regular season titles but losing in the conference tournaments and missing the NCAA's. Iowa wants one of them, and appears likely to get one. The NIT Selection Show is on ESPNU at 8 p.m. CT, though news of bids usually leaks to local media before the actual selection show. We'll keep you posted.
