CREEPYPALOOZA 2013: The Skills

Iowa has new players. Here are some of them.

NIC SHIMONEK

Quarterback
Corsicana, TX (Mildred)
3★ Rivals, 3★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Nic Shimonek

The first quarterback commitment of the Greg Davis era, and the first Texas recruit generated by Davis' connections to the Lone Star State, Shimonek was under the radar when he committed to Iowa last May. He then took his team to the state championship game. Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State showed some late interest. Live arm, pro style, tall and lanky. Whether that translates into another Stanzi or another Wienke remains to be seen.

2013 Outlook: Redshirt.
Fun Facts: In ancient times, following a military defeat by the Gilieads, the Ephraimites identified surviving members of their tribe by using the password "Shimonek".

LESHUN DANIELS

Running Back
Warren, OH (Harding)
3★ Rivals, 3★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, LeShun Daniels

Daniels was a Boston College commit who reopened his recruitment when BC's staff turned over. Iowa had just lost Greg Garmon, and Daniels was a perfect replacement. At 5'11 and 220 pounds, he's the big, bruising halfback that Ferentz covets. Ran for over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior at Warren G. Harding High School. Got to regulate, indeed.

2013 Outlook: He's an Iowa halfback, so he'll probably play, come down with dysentery, and transfer somewhere else in December.
Fun Facts: LeShun is French for "The spiteful ignorance of another person."

AKRUM WADLEY

Running Back
Newark, NJ (Weequahic)
2★ Rivals, 2★ Scout, 2★ ESPN, 2★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Akrum Wadley

All we know about Wadley, who committed to Iowa earlier this week after receiving a last-second offer, is that he fits a new mold for the Hawkeyes: Small and fast. Wadley is 5'10 and 170 pounds, but took his team to a state championship game last season after running for more than 1,900 yards. Didn't get much recruiting love from either the recruitniks or the schools: His only other BCS-level offer was Temple. A classic Iowa late-term flyer.

2013 Outlook: If he can catch a pass, he could play receiver. If not, he's either redshirting or returning kicks.
Fun Facts: Wadley is from Newark, home to the nation's finest airport!

ANDRE HARRIS

Receiver
Kirkwood, MO (Kirkwood)
3★ Rivals, 2★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Andre Harris

In a class full of sub-six foot wide receivers, Harris might be the smallest of them all: 5'10 and just 157 pounds at the time of his commitment in June, though he's reportedly now 6' and 170 pounds. He was part of the first wave of the Davis receivers: sub-4.5 40 yard dash and sub-190 pound frame. Harris had an offer from Illinois, as well. His team won the Missouri state championship this year for the first time in 114 years of football. He caught 33 passes for 615 yards and seven touchdowns, and added 36 tackles and four interceptions as a defensive back.

2013 Outlook: He'll play on Day 1; aside from JUCO recveiver Damond Powell, Harris is the most likely incoming receiver to get on the field in September.
Fun Facts: Iowa won't be Andre's only team: When not playing football, Andre Harris is a member of the songwriting team of Dre & Harris, made up of him and Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner.

ANJEUS JONES

Receiver
Dallas, TX (South Oak Cliff)
2★ Rivals, 2★ Scout, 2★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Anjeus Jones

Another last-second commitment, Anjeus Jones did his best to commit to every school west of the Mississippi River. He initially committed to New Mexico State following a visit in early January. One week later, he changed his commitment to Colorado State after a visit to Fort Collins. He came to Iowa City last weekend, and left as a Hawkeye. Jones is a bit different from the other Davis receivers. For one, he's 6'3 and 195 pounds. For another, his production isn't spectacular: As a senior, he caught 23 passes for 390 yards and seven touchdowns.

2013 Outlook: He says Iowa coaches expect him to compete for playing time next year, but Iowa's not going to play five freshmen wideouts. He has a chance, but it's 50/50 at best that he avoids a redshirt.
Fun Facts: Contrary to popular belief, Anjeus was not named for the sauce served with a french dip sandwich. That sauce is named "worcestershire sauce".

DERRICK MITCHELL JR.

Receiver
St. Louis, MO (Vashon)
3★ Rivals, 3★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Derrick Mitchell Jr.

If the 2011 recruiting class was dominated by the mid-Atlantic and 2012 focused on Illinois, the 2013 class concentrated on St. Louis. Mitchell, a 6', 180-pound receiver, is the third skill position recruit from the St. Louis area this year. His offer sheet included Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas State, and Iowa State. His commitment almost immediately brought Andre Harris behind him, and his ability as a rusher and receiver is well-documented.

2013 Outlook: Again, he's in the mix for playing time right away, but there's only room for so many receivers on the two-deep. Four receivers, to be more specific.
Fun Facts: Mitchell is the exception that proves the rule: Never trust a guy with two first names.

DAMOND POWELL

Receiver
Ephraim, UT (Snow College)
3★ Rivals, 2★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Damond Powell

Powell led the nation last year in receiving at the JUCO level, catching 41 passes for a staggering 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns. That's 30 yards per catch, with one in three receptions ending in a score. That's insane. He had an offer from Ohio and interest from Minnesota and Texas Tech late in the game. He also inadvertently confirmed Campbell's termination about a month before Ferentz said anything about it.

2013 Outlook: Should be Iowa's designated underneath/screen guy for the next couple of years.
Fun Facts: Powell went to Snow College, named for the infamous mid-90s hip hop artist. Their mascot is the Informers.

DERRICK WILLIES

Receiver
Rock Island, IL (Rock Island)
3★ Rivals, 3★ Scout, 3★ ESPN, 3★ 247Sports

You Might Remember Him from Such Posts As: Have a Seat, Derrick Willies

Willies is the last of the big, physical wide receivers that Iowa had been recruiting. He committed to Iowa in April, when Davis was just getting started, but retained his offer and stayed with Iowa despite last season's crippling ineptitude. Willies is 6'3 and 190 pounds, but runs a sub-4.5 fake 40 and produced (55 catches, 810 yards, 10 TDs as a senior). He was also his school's kicker in his last season, which is great.

2013 Outlook: He could be Iowa's much-needed deep threat, but figuring out which of these five receivers will contribute is impossible at this point. I'll say redshirt, but that's a hunch.
Fun Facts: Derrick is a bit of a locker room cut-up, routinely pulling pranks on teammates and telling them they "just got a case of the Willies" as his fellow players laugh uproariously.
