SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Rankings 2011

Lemmings! You're all lemmings!

We were talking about Iowa State on Twitter a couple of days ago, specifically the annual claim by Cyclone fans that "this is the best ISU team since 2002". An Iowa fan who shall not be named claimed that 2002 ISU did not beat a ranked team. He was incorrect: ISU defeated Nebraska when the Huskers were ranked 19th, but it goes to a larger point. That team beat Iowa -- they were the only team to do that in the regular season -- but to this person, that was a win over an unranked team, because Iowa did not enter the poll until early October. According to this line of logic, Iowa only earned its standing at the end of the year; it could never have been a case of the pollsters simply interpreting the information it had wrong and making piss-poor predictions of what would happen.

So, yeah, Alabama is #1 and USC #2, as expected. We're the only ones putting Oklahoma State at #1, as expected. And if you don't think these things matter, come back here at the end of the year and see how the ties are being broken. I'll give you a hint: It's largely based on that poll on the left.
