IOWA MEN'S GOLF IS PLAYING WELL IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT. The Hawkeye men are currently tied for sixth at the Riveria Country Club in California. The Hawkeye team shot an opening round of six over par. Joseph Winslow is the highest Hawkeye on the leaderboard tied for fourth with a first round score of two under par.

The Hawkeyes came into the tournament the 25th ranked team. For a preview (published before the tourney began) you can read up here. You can follow along with the leaderboard here at

INCOMING HOOPS FROSH MIKE GESELL NAMED PARADE ALL-AMERICAN. Gesell is one of 40 players selected with the honor. Iowa hoopster and North Carolina commit Marcus Paige is also on the All-American team. Both Gesell and Paige were their state's Mr. Basketball.

JAMES VANDENBERG WAS ONE OF 39 FBS QUARTERBACKS TO THROW FOR OVER 3,000 YARDS LAST SEASON. And he is the lone returning Big Ten quarterback that accomplished that feat. ESPN'S Big Ten blogger Brian Bennett thinks that despite losing Marvin McNutt, JVB can get there again.

EVEN WITH LOFTY EXPECTATIONS FOR JVB THE HAWKEYES AREN'T PREDICTED TO CONTEND FOR THE BIG TEN TITLE. Pat Harty put the time in to read those preseason football magazines and writes that Iowa isn't predicted to win the Legends division in a single one.

LAST WEEK WE DID A LOT OF TALKING ABOUT IOWA'S FUTURE FOOTBALL SCHEDULES. Scott Dochterman writes that a neutral-site BCS opponent is a real possibility in 2016. Iowa could fill that "TBD" slot with a Pac-12 team or stay close to home and play a game in Soldier Field like they will this season.

THE CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE HAS A COUNTDOWN TO FOOTBALL OF SORTS. The series begins at #45 with an explanation of the series. Marc Morehouse is going to profile the two-deeps and starts with post #44, long snapper Casey Kreiter. Post #43 is a wide receiver that will see his first action this fall, Jacob Hillyer. (Here is a late add: Jaleel Johnson.)
