SO, WHERE WERE WE? Last week, Fran McCaffery's squad took to the sunny beaches of Cancun and made it to the final of the Cancun Challenge. The Hawkeyes couldn't buy a bucket against Wichita State and fell 75-63 in Wednesday night's finale. It was Iowa's first loss on the young season. Next up is Virginia Tech tomorrow night at Blacksburgh as part of the Big Ten/ACC challenge. Here are tomorrow night's game notes.
FRESH OFF THE CANCUN TRIP, IOWA SCHEDULES TOURNAMENTS FOR 2013 AND '14. McCaffery's Hawkeyes will play in Alaska as part of the Alaskan Shootout next season. Iowa will play in New York City in 2014. The lineup for next year's trip includes: Denver, Harvard, Indiana State, Pepperdine, Texas Christian, Tulsa and Alaska Anchorage.
IT WAS AN UP AND DOWN WEEKEND FOR LISA BLUDER'S BUNCH. The Hawkeye ladies lost a heart breaker in Miami. Florida International got a last second buzzer beater to down Iowa 66-65. The Hawkeyes rebounded last night to come from behind and knock off #12 West Virginia. Iowa scored 54 second half points to win 79-70.
FOOTBALL IS OVER. Next season begins tomorrow, per Marc Morehouse. James Morris will enter his senior season as a Hawkeye. "6:30 in the morning," Morris told Morehouse. That's when next year begins.
NEBRASKA BEAT WRITER TROLLIN. Pour some salt in the wound, eh? It's true, of course, but / cries...
HOT RUMOR ALERT! Okay, the axe is falling around the college football world. Purdue's Danny Hope is the first Big Ten coach to get the pink slip. Purdue fired Hope yesterday despite a (6-6) record and a bowl berth for the Boilers. There's a rumor, one source, saying folks at Illinois aren't happy with year one of the Tim Beckman regime (that same source has back tracked a little bit since Saturday). There's also one source saying Gary Pinkel may be out at Missouri. Those are Iowa recruiting battlegrounds.
Auburn's Gene Chizik, N.C. State's Tom O'Brien, BC's Frank Spaziani and Colorado's Jon Embree also got canned yesterday. There's now openings at Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, California, N.C. State, Boston College and Purdue.
WHAT ABOUT IOWA? The hot rumor is that Greg Davis will resign this week. (NOTE: This is only a rumor that's only source is a few scattered message board posts with third hand information from cousins, brothers and curious email exchanges.) There is to be a Kirk Ferentz press conference this week. The date is still a mystery (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). Rumors cite a desire by Davis' wife to return to Texas and a lack of passion, or however people are wording it. Of course, this could be wishful thinking (MIKE STOOPS TO IOWA!). But, there's a tiny bit of smoke, so I felt it was worth mentioning. We'll keep the eyes on Twitter and follow along with other coaching news throughout the day/week. Because, well, there's nothing - football related - better to do.
