SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings
Not much new this week. Florida nearly passed Notre Dame at the top of the poll, but at the end of the day it's just minor vacillations in the top 8. After that, it's just a mass of humanity. The bottom of the poll is all-new; I honestly don't think I've ever seen that out of our poll. There are plenty of teams -- Nebraska and Cincinnati chief among them -- that could be in play were it not for losses to teams with equal or better records that aren't in contention.
We're at the season's halfway point, so what better time to look at some of the internal numbers? Superlatives!
Best team with a record under .500: Tennessee. Everyone laughed when Nick Saban damned Derek Dooley with praise this weekend, but the fact is that the 3-4 Vols have lost to four teams that are a combined 27-1. They're a net +8 in scoring differential despite that fact.
Worst undefeated team: Louisville. Sorry, Mark Ennis, but this one isn't even close. I have 7-0 Louisville 43rd in the standings, mostly because the Cardinals have faced one of the country's worst schedules. Louisville opponents are a combined 12-33 this season, and that doesn't include a game against Missouri State. Further, they are only +74 against that schedule, with close wins against Florida International, Southern Miss, and South Florida.
Toughest schedule: Kentucky. Poor Joker Phillips. Not only has his team had to go through the SEC East -- they've already played Florida, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Georgia, and Arkansas -- but their non-conference slate featured 7-0 Louisville, 5-2 Western Kentucky, and 6-1 Kent State (who they actually beat).
Easiest schedule: Kent State. Speak of the devil, the surprising Flashes have seen the following murderer's row: Towson, 1-6 Kentucky, 1-6 Buffalo, 5-3 Ball State, 1-6 Eastern Michigan, 1-6 Army, and 3-5 Western Michigan. That's a net 21 games under .500, equal to Louiville and Northern Illinois for worst in the country.
Most dominant, offensive edition: Florida State. The 'Noles have run up a +254 margin of victory, 25 points better than Alabama and 38 higher than Oregon.
Most dominant, defensive edition: Alabama: This isn't even close. Alabama has given up just 58 points in seven games, giving them a pythagorean differential of 28. The next closest is 70, and yes, smaller is better.
BHGPoll Games of the Week:
#1 Notre Dame at #7 Oklahoma: Arguably the Blogpoll game of the year to date, Notre Dame would solidify a somewhat shaky hold on the top spot with a win. And yet...
#8 Texas Tech at #5 Kansas State: I'd rather watch this game. Collin Klein went 19/21 for 323 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for four more, against West Virginia. Steampunk Tebow is your midseason Heisman trophy winner.
#12 Ohio State at #21 Penn State: A relevant Big Ten game? Surely you jest!
Game of the Weak: #120 Hawaii at #119 Colorado State: I can't believe this isn't on television. These two teams are a combined 2-11 and have been outscored by 237. And Hawaii has to travel to Colorado in late October to boot.
Iowa in the poll: #54. Presented without comment.
