'Wear Green for Greenwood' Is a Go

We haven't reported too much on Brett Greenwood's condition in the weeks since his heart attack on September 9, mostly because the news we have heard has been little more than rumor.  We know Greenwood, a former walk-on who started 29 games at free safety for Iowa between 2007-2010, collapsed during a workout at his high school in the Quad Cities, was helicoptered to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and remains in a medically induced coma there now.

Yesterday, Brett's parents issued a statement:

During this very difficult time for our family, we have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, the community and the Hawkeye Nation. It means a great deal to us to have so many people reaching out to us and telling us that they are praying for Brett.

Brett continues to fight and to make improvements. We would ask that you continue to keep Brett in your thoughts and prayers, now more than ever. We also appreciate everyone respecting our family's privacy at this time.

As noted in the Fanshots earlier this week, a grassroots-level movement has begun supporting a "Green Out" in support of Greenwood this Saturday at Iowa's game against Louisiana-Monroe.  A Facebook page promoting the event has sprung up, and a t-shirt company is selling shirts with all proceeds reportedly going to UIHC (though it's unclear if you can still get a shirt in time for Saturday's game).

There has been no word from the Greenwoods on where donations can be made.  In the meantime, the "Green Out" seems like a nice gesture of support (just as the green-out of last week's Pleasant Valley-Bettendorf high school game was).  We're in complete support of the movement, though we hope that the Greenwoods know, with or without visual support, that our thoughts and prayers remain with them.
