The depth charts are out for the Purdue game, and we finally welcome back Mike Klinken... Mike... Goddammit, he's still out.
Klinkenborg, Moylan still out
It appears regular defensive starters Mike Klinkenborg and Devan Moylan will be out for the fourth consecutive game Saturday.
Klinkenborg, a senior linebacker, still is recovering from a concussion suffered Sept. 22 at Wisconsin, while Moylan, a senior free safety, has a strained groin.
Bryon Gattas and Jacody Coleman will continue to fill in for Klinkenborg and Brett Greenwood for Moylan.
Other depth chart notes...
This is an insanely young team. Check out the depth chart after the break... there's an awful lot of Fr.'s and So.'s on that list, aren't there? There are as many freshmen (17) as there are juniors and seniors... combined. In fact, of the 44 offensive and defensive positions on the 2-deep, 27 of them are sophomores or younger. Even on special teams, the only non-freshmen are the backup kicker (sophomore whipping boy Austin Signor) and the long-snapper (walk-on senior Daniel Olzsta). I hate to go all italic porn on you like that, but (insert vulgar and sacrilegious interjection), folks, this team has been absolutely gutted since April.
At the receiver positions, while Stross, Cleveland and DJK are the most game-ready players, #4 WR Paul Chaney was actually Iowa's leading receiver against Illinois. If Iowa can field four receivers that JC can establish a rhythm and rapport with, that's not half-bad.
Still, it seems like DJK is the kind of player that Iowa really ought to be forcing the opposing defense to react to. Make his routes as simple as possible. Run bubble screens and quick tosses. Put the ball in his hands way more than logic would dictate. Odds are that if you throw his way 8 times (absurd, right? Do it anyway), something like this or this will happen. The more you target him, the more the run game opens up.
Last, notice that at both guard positions, both Bulaga and Doering are now co-starters. It's little more than idle speculation, but don't be surprised if the "co-" is dropped by the end of the year--more likely sooner with Bulaga, who was very highly regarded during summer practice before a shoulder injury set him back. He had been drawing raves from teammates and coaches, and with Big Dace unlikely to take another snap, Iowa can use all the ill-tempered road-graders they can get.
