The Entertainment is Over
Not so surprising news from Iowa City today; Cedric "The Entertainer" Everson is among three freshmen who are gone, gone, gone. According to GoldPantsPal Eric Page, Everson and the other two young men implicated in the October sexual assault will not join the Hawkeyes during next semester's spring practices.
We've bemoaned the rampant program attrition around here in times past, but in this instance Iowa is undoubtedly engaging in addition by subtraction. Ferentz has a tough line to toe; he's going to have to get tougher on discipline and character and improve player retention. In this case, he has chosen to remove the players from the team, and that's the right move.
I was thinking about posting a nice retrospective on Everson's brief but eventful career here, but fuck it and fuck him. He had an opportunity to play ball in the Big Ten and he threw it away in despicable fashion. We wash our hands of him and pay him no more mind. It is done and he is gone.

Happened When I Was at Hillcrest
A girl I knew who lived on a different floor of Hillcrest my freshman year was raped by a football player. The case didn't stick, but the player was eventually cut from the team for disciplinary issues. You have to run a clean program before you can do anything else in my opinion. There's no room for rape on the bench or on the field, let alone this campus.
It's really discouraging to see the rise in rape statistics in Iowa City, not just high profile defendants like the players, but whoever assaulted all those women this fall. When I read any fan's reaction and they're like, "What'll happen to Iowa's backfield ?" They don't get it. They don't get what this is all about on a fundamental level. This is like hearing a Pizza Delivery guy was stabbed and your first reaction is "Was the pizza alright?"
I hope the victim gets as good a chance to move on from this as is possible - honestly I don't know if somebody can "heal" from this kind of assault.

Amen
I agree completely with your position on the sexual assault issues in Iowa City. The numbers are absolutely shocking and disgusting. And I agree with your statement that the starting running back shouldn't be a concern right now.
That being said, we just analyzed the potential running backs for next season. We don't mean to lessen the significance of this event (I think our position has been pretty clear that guilty parties should be kicked out, put in jail, and waterboarded), but it's our obligation here to at least examine the football side of things.

Glad they're gone
Completing disgusting crime and, if guilty, they have no place in society at large, let alone on a football team.
Say what you will about all the Iowa guys getting into trouble this year, but at least Kirk's been strict in his punishments. He doesn't put up with any bullshit, which is part of the reason I'm inclined to believe that this was just one really bad year and not a sign of an out of control program.
