Around SBN: Exclusive Interview with Offensive Line Coach Gregg Smith Bar-right-arrows

It's like that scene from "Aliens..."

Since the aISU game, there's a scene from a movie that has been playing itself over and over on a loop in my head whenever I think about the offensive anemia & impotence we've seen over the last couple seasons or so.

That scene is from the movie "Aliens."

Star-divide

Early on in the film, the Marines land on LV-14 to investigate the break in communication from the settlers' colony.  During the exciting first battle scene wherein they first make contact with the aliens, the C.O., Lt. Gormann, from the relative safety of the armored command vehicle, freezes up and in slack-jawed horror is only able to sit there and mutter, "I told them to fall back..."
Meanwhile, his unit is being slaughtered like hogs, screaming, firing blindly, panicking, running in all directions, waiting for some kind of coherent command.  Regroup?  Fight?  Retreat?  Precious seconds pass and the death toll rises.  Ripley finally grabs Lt. Gormann by the collar and shakes him, screaming in his ear, "DO SOMETHING!!"

That's how I feel.  We (the fans) are Ripley.  KOK is Lt. Gormann.  The players are the Marines, directionless, panicked, firing blindly, casualties mounting, utter disaster looming.

Or maybe Kirk is Ripley and we (the fans) are Newt, powerlessly condemned to watch the slaughter unfold before our eyes, praying that KF will finally grab KOK by the shirtfront, shake him, and scream, "DO SOMETHING!!" and take command before it's too late.

the Somme

I never liked sci-fi.

OTOH, I am a student of history and war.  Did you know there were 1.2 mm casualties at the Somme?  (That would be WWI, and I mean 1,200,000 human beings.)  None of it mattered.

For fuck's sake, get the ball to the edge.  So far, Jake's a British leftenant told to stand up, rally the men, and run headlong into the machine guns.

The real measure of a coach, other than whether or not his players believe in him, is what he does at halftime.  The great coaches read and react and re-plan the game in 15 minutes.  We better see something this week.  So far this season: half-time adjustments: pathetic.

We move the ball with an empty backfield against Wisconsin.  We come out in the I!  We run for 6-7 a carry against IU, stop them on their first series -- and come out throwing!

Hello?
