Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

SELECTION SUNDAY OPEN THREAD

Good evening, BHGPers. We're here to run through the bracketeering, the insanity, the laughs and the cries with you. Mr. Pow Surprise is at the computer, Jebus is drunk and loitering at the Knapp Center with the Drake Bulldogs (for real), and The State is visiting the Ultimate Warrior's homeland (parts unknown).

Also, for the sake of reiteration, the BHGP Yahoo! Tournament Pick'Em league is still open. Just click here, enter in League #5862 and password gornstar, and you're in like urine. Hawkeye State is your early leader for best team name, but it's early.

Where do you think the Hawkeyes'll be placed? 14th seed? I hope not 15th. Let's hear it.

I'm putting this out there right now

But the Coach K/Coach J commercial kills me every time. And you bet your ass I'd rather be at Coach J's camp. J's got skills.

Number 1 Seeds are in

No surprises: Drake, Drake, Drake, and Drake.

Errr, UNC, Kansas, UCLA, and Memphis. Tennessee might have a gripe, but I don't know who you'd kick out to make room for the Vols.

We are

eagerly awaiting his text messages on-location reporting. Not sure why you want to be around some kids who find out they're a 6 seed, but whatever.

Indiana is an 8 seed?!

Holy smoking hell, that's a travesty. I'm not sure I'd have seeded them worse than Notre Dame, and the Irish are a freaking 5 seed.

Bottom half of the East

Looks like cake for Tennessee. There's nobody in that half of the bracket that can beat them. Their strongest test before the Elite 8's going to be, like, Butler.

The Midwest is loa-ho-ho-ded

Kent State is capable of beating KU in the second round. Kansas State ought to be able to beat USC in the 6-11 matchup, then give Wisconsin fits. Hell, even the Gonzaga-Davidson winner will probably play the Hoyas close.

About 4000 in the Knapp Center

Just to watch a TV show. Last year they had trouble drawing half that to an actual game.

Yeah I was gonna say

I've been to a shitload of Drake games over the years and, prior to this year, the only time I've ever seen the place that full before was whenever Iowa came to town.

Drake is a 5 seed in the West

Naturally, they're headed to Tampa.

They're facing Kige's Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. I fear Kige's analysis of the matchup. It could take him a minute and a half to pronounce "Emmenecker."

MANCOTT!

Mancott with us, Drake brethren!

About 14, but that's not the point

Their overall body of work sort of commands a much higher seed, doesn't it?

So Iowa didn't get in?

What a joke.  In the selection committee sponsored by any chain restaurants that I can mancott?

Late? Perhaps

but drunk nonetheless. The Knapp Center was awesome. Butler got HOSED.

What the?

I checked this at like 3pm and Jebus was up in votes?

Hey, he is still up in votes! Are there hanging chads to blame this on? Absentee ballots counted at the last second?

Worse

Human error. I had filled in the bracket for Gorney at about 3 p.m. on the day of voting before Jebus overtook him. I then, in truly wise fashion, posted it without double-checking.

The bracket is fixed now. Harty somehow magically produced 20 votes to take the lead three days after the fact, but I've been tabulating a day after voting on each of these matches, so the shenanigans are easier to avoid. OPS wins.

Oh, and the bracket is changed, so now it doesn't even look like you're making sense, meg. For once, you may blame us.

a few things
  • thanks for your confidence in the JHC army
  • for Harty to get 20 votes - total - is not magic, it's heresy
  • also, thanks for making us make less sense than Meg - well played
  • the ZookHook is gonna crush me

It was something

Seriously, it was crazy busy. Even for us medie types.

Drake at 5?

I wanted to complain, but butler got a 7. Oh, the wrath I would have spewed if they got a higher ranking than Drake! I still want to complain. The Bulldogs should have been a 3 or 4.

No matter, the Day of the Dolph is at hand. Destiny says final four. Fitting that the re-awakening of Drake occurred during a Hawkeye down year. It is all falling into place.

bracket buster games

Are not a friend to the mid-majors. The committee uses those games to downgrade teams, not to upgrade them. Butler is 9th in the country, but a 7 seed simply because they lost to Drake. Drake did not get bumped up to a 4, which I believe they earned, because they won at Butler.

No matter - Dolph wears a blue leather suit and the Bulldogs will not be stopped.

Poor, poor Butler

They're going to get drilled by Bruce Pearl's obsession with Erin Andrews.  What a shitty 2nd round game for a team that played that well this season.

And poor Drake has to play the uber-athletic UCONN team in Round 2.  Sadly, I have them losing that game as well.  But based on my picks for the BHGP brackets, you can all guess how I'll do with this one.  Damn.
