ON THE BOOKS

That just happened. Not exactly a "march" on San Antonio. Perhaps "stagger" back to Iowa City is more fitting? The loss today was every bit as ugly as the entire season. You could show today's game to someone who hasn't watched a second of Iowa basketball this year and they would know. They'd just know. The inconsistent defense and turnovers may not have been enough to lose it today, so we added a new weapon to the mix. That weapon? Getting Cyrus Tate to the free throw line 17 times. See, this is bad, on account of Cyrus being one of the worst free throw shooters in school history. We went over 16 minutes in the second half with no field goals -- none -- and just 8 made free throws. It was hard to watch, like the entire season, and now it's mercifully over.

Where do we go from here? Well, for starters, we can officially separate ourselves from the 2007 football season and the 07-08 basketball season. For me personally, they were collectively the most painful seasons of my lifetime. The only thing worse than their seasons, was the decision to start an Iowa Hawkeye blog in the midst of them. Bad move. But we're not quitting! Quite the contrary. We've only just begun. Letting go of last year's [you're already calling it "last year"? wow.--ed.] baggage will feel good. It'll be therapeutic. That's where we come in. This thread is the place for you to dump your bile, hate, and vitriol at the 07-08 football and basketball seasons. Scream, holler, and caterwaul at the gods. Say things you don't mean. Let it out. Then we're going to put it to rest here and move on to good happy stuff, like the NCAA Tournament, the upcoming Spring Game, and American Idol.

Here's your forum. Go.

Frankly...

After those two seasons, I don't even have the energy to vent about it.  I'm just glad it's all over.

Also...

I went back and read the "Say things you don't mean.." link.  Holy shit there is some hilarious stuff in there.

sadly

It wasn't a humor piece I wrote that. I think I even went on EDSBS Live and talked about it that night. Ask people who were unfortunate enough to be within earshot of me that day.

Actually, after re-reading, I may still mean it.
Fuck, now I'm pissed off again.
Damn you, Bucket!

let's not get carried away

nothing is more painful than anything Dane Cook does--except for Employee of the Month. That was the awesome.

Last year was an entire waste of my life. That is all.

Sucks

I really did expect an awful season from this basketball team. I guess the reason I actually started caring was we were 4-6 at one point in conference play. Are you fucking kidding me, we were almost .500?!  Damnit.

This loss hurts, I was looking forward to starting St. Patty's Day early tomorrow and drinking during the Wisc/Iowa game.  Now its the Wisc/Mich game and I won't watch. Now I will probably go to work.

Fuck shit balls.

Also...

Not sure what just came over me, but I'm pumped for football.

I can't wait until we destroy those bitches from Ames. I can't wait till I destroy bitches in Pittsburgh.  I can't wait till City Boyz Inc open up for Kelly Clarkson.

What is happening to me.

It's not just this year, either.

From the moment that fucking 3-pointer at the end of the Northwestern State basketball game went swish there has been a cloud over the big two of football and men's basketball.  Then came the primetime showcase against Ohio State.  Gameday.  All of it.  I hadn't been that pumped for a regular season football game in a long time.  Oh yeah.  The rest of 2006 was pretty much a buzzkill, right up until Scott Chandler (apparently) lined up a half yard shy of the LOS.

Fast forward to basketball season.  Haluska, Smith and such an unsatisfying end to the season that even the NIT said "pass."  Then 2007 football and the offense that wasn't.  Then 2008 bball and the offense that still wasn't.  3-win Western Michigan?  At home?  On senior day?  To clinch a bowl bid?  I still can't really believe it.  No fucking way.

I still wonder if this isn't some sort of devine retribution from the sports gods for the worst clock management I've ever seen somehow turning into the most unlikely win.  If so, I think we're even.

It's time to have some fun being a Hawkeye again.  My wife has relatives from Madison who alternate between laughing at me and taking pity.  I can't take it.

For the love of James Hardy, it has to turn back around, right?

I feel ya, brother.

My wife's fam are all Illini.  All of them.  The ONLY saving grace to the past year in Hawkeye Men's sports was beating Illinois back in October.  That's it.  Even winning back Floyd was like eating a big bowl of tepid Meh soup.

And yes, knocking off MSU and aOSU in hoops were nice upsets, but those were as flukey as flukey gets and shouldn't really count.

SWEET!!

Can I get the black one with the cool gold piping, like some sort of Bizarro World cruise ship steward?

Um, yes absolutely?

Then all you have to do is perfect the Clap Clap Point Point dance, and you're on your way to destroying the Democratic Party winning elections all over the place.

Duff?

Hilary Duff thinks all states are important, just that the Dakotas are slightly less important.

Fanning

Having a last name that's also a present participle would be fucking sweet.

Like, "Hi, I'm Todd Exploding."

Rad.

After Reading...

all of these comments, including my own, I'm suddenly depressed.  I didn't really do the math that, indeed, we've sucked at sports (minus sports I don't care about, sorry wrestling) for a solid 2 years.

Whiskey. Now.

Nothing is so cruel as hope

For the last 2 (maybe 3) years, I feel like we've been strung along.  We all hated (name redacted), but we'd get close to post season play.  We all knew that Lick had been given an uncoached JV team.  We all knew that with the exception of the running backs, the skill players were young and probably not that talented.  We went into these seasons with lowered expectations.  The football team was middle of the pack despite the cake schedule.  Basketball was going to be just above NW.  We knew these things.  We were comfortable with them.  Look back at the early basketball posts, how many of us said, point blank, I don't care if they don't win a game, just show us some improvement.  We wanted a bowl game, someplace not named Detroit or the Alamo.  Nothing fancy.
But for the football team, we didn't expect the injuries, the criminals, the lack of adjustments.
B-Ball, we didn't expect that we might be .500 in the B11 at one point, or that we could close out the season against a string of patsies to give us confidence.

In short, the football team started with mid-level expectations, which were reinforced during the opening win against NIU, but completely fell apart later.  The basketball team started showing promise before regressing.

What I'm trying to say, and doing a terrible, rambling job of, is...STOP FUCKING WITH US.  If you're going to be bad, don't tease us with being decent.  If the preseason estimates are off, let us know early.  I'm sick of the roller coaster.  It's the constant thinking that we've got it, that we've turned the corner, that's something has sunk in, been learned/understood/clicked only to drop right back down.
(steps down) Ok.  I'm done.

I agree with this...

... its like thinking you've got your groove on, you are about to nail the Prom Queen, and instead SURPRISE you get kicked in the nuts.  Somehow thats much worse than someone telling you they are going to kick you in the nuts, and then, oh, look at that, not so surprisingly, you get kicked in the nuts.
