Around SBN: Exclusive Interview with Offensive Line Coach Gregg Smith Bar-right-arrows

Immediate Post-Spring Game Mood? "Dour."

If you missed the game, go here: PlayOn Sports, click on the Iowa Spring Game button (don't worry, it's all free), and watch the proceedings. As near as I can tell, it's the audio feed from the radio on top of the visuals from the big screen at the stadium (hence the plugs for, like, Iowa baseball). A couple quick observations--McNutt needs a lot of work, Stanzi needs a lot less, and Christensen's grasp on the starting spot is, uh, tenuous.

Also, the linebackers look great, the offensive line doesn't, and Paki O'Meara is, shockingly, not the answer at tailback.

If you went to the game, by all means, leave some thoughts in the comments, and we'll be going position-by-position over the next couple of days. In the mean time, time to return to the DL as I fight off a nasty head cold the only way I know how-- Tylenol Orange and that Purple Drank, lawya.

The Next Brad Banks? Maybe Later

That should just about end the Marvin McNutt boomlet.  The kid has some serious raw talent - that much is evident watching him improvise while his offensive line crumbled like the Berlin Wall - but his footwork stinks (he invented the 10-step drop this afternoon), his throwing mechanics are somewhat screwed up, and his passes float away like my hopes and dreams.  In other words, he's Brad Banks 2001.

He might well quarterback this team someday, but it's not today or any other point in 2008 unless he works his ass off.

Ricky Stanzi, on the other hand...

"Brad Banks 2001"

So, better than Kyle McCann then?

And, for the record...

JC6's first two series against the first-team defense had (by my count) 4 pass plays.  One was completed, one was thrown into triple coverage and knocked down, one was a pick six, and one never left his hands.

But don't worry.  That's how Matt Rodgers' 1991 spring game went, too.

Raw Mcnutt muffin?

So my dreams of buying a McNutt jersey this season and watching him play are going away faster than you can say Aaron Grieving?

I love the Matt Rodgers line because it was exactly what I responded to my buddy when I was informed that JC threw a pick six.

"Do no worry, Matt Rodgers will lead us back to a Rose Bowl."

I wish I could share the optimism of other Hawkeye fans, who think Iowa will be much improved next season. I see the same inaccurate QB with happy feet, the same coaching staff with outdated philosophies, and RB depth chart that would worry an UNI panther fan.

I do like some of the young talent, especially on D so not all is lost. Well, at least that is what I keep telling myself.
