As many have noticed, Iowa the last two years had used some form of "Rise" in their posters. Here is the poster from 2013:
My guess is that this is a play off the 2012 movie The Dark Knight Rises. Like a bad sequel they decided to use "Rising" for their 2014 poster:
I know we are still fresh off the loss in the
play-in game first round of the NCAA tournament against Tennessee, but I thought it is never too early to be thinking of the 2015 poster. I feel like I have to continue the trend of using "Rise" in the title, but I also wanted to go back to the roots of Iowa Basketball posters. They didn't all take themselves too seriously. If you want to take a look at lot of the older posters take a look at storminspank's blog post and you will see what I'm talking about. There are a lot more great ones, so post more in the comments if you find them.
It also helps that using the word "Rise" is not just a trend that Iowa uses, movies have been overusing this for years. Here is a quick list:
- The Dark Knight Rises (See last two posters)
- Fantastic Four : Rise of the Silver Surfer
- G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra
- Underworld : Rise of the Lycans
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
- Rise of the Planet of the Apes
- Hannibal #Rising
- Van Wilder 2 : The Rise of Taj
- 300: Rise of an Empire
There are several more, but I think the point is made. These are all also sequels, prequels, or reboots as well I believe which is another movie trend.
I decided to use the 300 sequel for my first poster idea, however I encourage you to think of poster ideas based off other movies, not just the ones that I used here. The key is that something has to be blatantly ripped off and/or it doesn't take itself too seriously.
proudly present to you my first submission for the 2015 Iowa Basketball poster - 30: Rise of Aaron White.
