If an 18 point win against the 10th best team in the nation doesn't legitimize a team, I don't know what does.
After losing 2 straight in Carver-Hawkeye arena and when the chances of an appearance in the NCAA tournament faded for some (ignorant) Hawkeye fans, a win against the #10 Wolverines seemed crucial. And the Hawkeyes delivered.
Most impressive of which would be PG Roy Devyn Marble. Marble had a staggering 26 points (22 of which came from the 1st half), was 8/17 from the floor, made all 4 free throws, had 1 rebound, and 2 assists. Mike Gesell was also a big contributor to the blow out. Gesell went 3 for 5 from the floor, made both of his free throws, had 4 rebounds, had an astounding 8 assists, and finished with 10 points. Most players did contribute positively in this all around team effort win.
This comes to show my favorite aspect of this year's team. With our overwhelmingly deep 11 man rotation (which is beginning to slim down), we have a new "star" per say every game. For example, against Michigan it was Marble, in the loss to Ohio State Gabriel Olaseni made a name for himself nationally wise.
On a side note, my affection for Olaseni is growing on a daily basis. On most occasions, I can see his growth from game to game. Despite his lack of experience that other players possess due to his late upbringing in the basketball world, he has everything else in order to be the model basketball player. Especially his passion for the game. Whenever he is on the court there is no one else putting in as much heart as he does, this season I haven't seen a single game where he hasn't given it 150%. Whether he's playing against UNC Wilmington or Michigan State, it's always a consistent effort.
Back on point, what I saw from Iowa Saturday gives me hope. This shows that we could make it to the Sweet 16, the Elite 8, or dare I say the Final 4 (if you'd like a small segment of validation Seth Greenberg agrees with me). I know I might be jumping ahead a bit but now that we have a signature win under our belt and this could be the game that helps get us out of our little funk we've been under the past 3 weeks, it's hard not to be optimistic.
I think the real the test for Iowa is how we handle the week break and then the road game against Penn State, which will be a more challenging game than people think. If we can wrap that win up my anticipation for late March will be overwhelming. But for now, only time will tell what is in store for us, and i'd really prefer that to be a hot streak in the tourney.Wolverines vs Hawkeyes coverage
