I've read a few online articles recently about a director I was vaguely aware of, but didn't really piece together his real legacy until researching him a bit more and seeing his true prowess. And I've become aware that my favorite director may end up being the king of satire-serious-satire, Mr. Paul Verhoeven. He made his early career in his native Netherlands, but you know him from when he was wooed to America, where he only made very good movies. Not a stinker among them, and some of your favorite 90s movies overall. Just check out his entire list of American movies:
Total Recall (1990)
Basic Instinct (1992)
Starship Troopers (1997)
Hollow Man (2000)
...and that's it. After the "flop" that was Showgirls, he was only being given shitty sci-fi scripts because he was thought of as too cheesy or too sensationalistic (both of which qualities made all those movies great). So he took one of those scripts and made Starship Troopers, one of the funnest sci-fi movies of the last few decades, before packing his bags full of money and moving back to the Netherlands. I think it's time to recognize Paul Verhoeven's genius and get him back for a movie or two. The big rumor lately has him directing The Governator in CONAN THE KING, a story about an aging Conan The Barbarian hanging onto his earned empire as he nears the age where some young bucks want to take his place. YES. OH GOD YES. Sign me up already. I'm in.
