Ahh, Ahh, Ahh, Ahh... stayin' alive, stayin' alive. I don't think the Bee Gees had Iowa's chances at a conference title in mind when they wrote this smash 70's hit, but hey if the shoe fits...
The shoe, which would happen to be Mike Gesell's new gold shoes, is the perfect size thanks to our not so dear friends Nebraska and Wisconsin. These two teams are usually the target of a lot of my hatred in the basketball and football world. But Sunday, that was far from the case.
In Nebraska's victory AT Michigan State I was all sMILES (how punny). And in honor of Wisconsin smashing Michigan, I almost had the urge to listen to Jump Around (I didn't, thank you Lord) but it was a good day for the good ole black and gold thanks to the red and white.
With those two losses Iowa moves within a game and a half to first in the conference. I had high hopes coming into this season but I did not expect a conference title. Iowa has 6 games left to prove me wrong.
Of those six games two of them are going to pose quite a challenge for the Hawkeyes, at home against the Badgers Saturday and at Michigan State in a few weeks. Do I think Iowa can go undefeated through this 6 game stretch? Definitely. Do I think we will? I doubt it.
Every team has their bumps in the road (except Syracuse and Wichita State... for now) and well I fear we have more bumps to overcome. Wisconsin is on a hot streak and has gone back to resembling the Wisconsin we played in January (I'm sure Fran remembers the game). This is the biggest test for us, are we going to continue to lose close games to teams we are better than? Or are we finally going to emerge as the Conference, or dare I say National title contenders that we have the potential to be? Only time will tell.
The rest of Iowa's schedule is far from a cakewalk. We play Wisconsin at home Saturday the 22nd, @ Minnesota 2/25, **@ Indiana 2/27, I'm assuming this is when the makeup game will occur.
Iowa's game @ Indiana 2/18 was postponed due to a metal disk that fell from the roof of Assembly Hall that crushed a seat and damaged others. I guess you could say Assembly Hall needs some reassembling, I'm sorry I couldn't help myself. In all honesty, we're very lucky that happened before the game and not during it.
Continuing... We play at home against Purdue 3/1, @Michigan State 3/6, and at home vs. Illinois 3/8. That concludes the regular season of 2013-2014. It feels like days ago I was glued to my live game cast trying to get updates on Iowa vs. UNC Wilmington... And now in less than a month Iowa will most likely be playing in the NCAA Tournament. Just let that sink in for a second (it feels nice doesn't it?).
Boy have we come a long way since 2006. Last season we came so close to getting into the tournament which fell through the hands of official Ted Valentine (yes Ted, I still remember. And I'm still bitter). This season has been one for the ages. I just hate to think in a matter of months it will be over, oh goodness I need to slow down. I guess I'm just extremely eager to be able to fill out my bracket and see Iowa on there.
