EDIT: Bumped to the front page. Some nice work here. -- ross
After hearing that Iowa employs one of the five worst coaches, I decided to check out how the BCS programs have fared the last three years. I wanted to weight recent performance so I credited every team with 3 points per 2012 win, 2 points per 2011 win, and 1 point per 2010 win.
Different schools have different expectations and resources so I used Stewart Mandel's tiers to create a multiplier. The top tier schools, I multiplied by .8, the next tier by .9, the next tier by 1, and the lowest tier by 1.1. I broke out the below graphs into three groups to make it at least slightly readable.
Despite having the worst season in more than a decade, Iowa still beat out more than a dozen teams. That's still really bad, and those three seasons in a vacuum would definitely demand change. However, it would be unreasonable to ignore the four top ten finishes in the prior eight years. I don't think anybody is happy with the recent on-field results, and I think Ferentz knows he needs to show progress by season's end and a huge leap forward in 2014.
