Dantonio From 2010: "When I became the head football coach here, I looked at football programs that have some similarities to ours in terms of what challenges they may have and I thought, 'Here's Iowa, good defensive football team, built on toughness, built on stability, continuity on their coaching staff, good fan support. So I felt like that was a program to try and emulate".
He wanted a tough, physical defense with a pro-style offense built on a solid running game and he's achieved that this year. In spades. The MSU defense this year is ferocious and probably the best B1G defense we've seen in a decade or more. The offense does essentially what Iowa does, but has more playmakers and takes more risks. They are a crappy offensive half at ND away from being undefeated and I give them a pretty good shot at beating OSU in the title game.
Well the student has become the master. Iowa now looks forlornly at MSU and thinks "that's what we are trying to do." MSU is using the Iowa model to do that same things that Iowa used to do, force pressure, turn you over, and grind you down. They are the new bullies of the B1G. They are more Iowa than Iowa at this point. It's tough as an Iowa fan to watch another program execute a plan that is working better than the school they modeled it on. They have out Iowa'd Iowa.
