Last week, the Super Awesome Prediction Machine (now renamed to "Super Prediction Action Machine," or "SPAM") predicted the following before the Northwestern game:
"Iowa BEATS Northwestern 32-24"
SPAM correctly predicted the winner and that Iowa would cover, but whiffed badly on the O/U. As I have done every week, I plugged the Big 10's performance this past weekend back into the machine and re-ran the model. Here is how Iowa's season shakes out according to SPAM. My model has us closing the gap on Nebraska quickly and Michigan is still a coin flip at Kinnick. Purdue should be a walk, with Wisconsin being a major challenge this week.
L Wisconsin (last week: L 30-25 this week: L 28-24)
The gap has narrowed a little. Our unimpressive second half against Northwestern drags us down, but our stout defensive performance is stealing points. Regardless, SPAM says Iowa stumbles at home against the Badgers, 28-24.
Wisconsin is currently giving up 9.5 at Iowa. Even without SPAM I would say that's too much. The O/U is currently set around 47-48. If you were a betting man slavishly devoted to the edicts of SPAM, you would take Iowa to beat the spread, Wisconsin to win, and the over on points.
W Purdue (last week: W 32-20; this week: W 31-19)
SPAM doesn't like our offense, but it likes our defense. Purdue hasn't done anything to alter its fate. SPAM still has Iowa winning by 12, but with fewer total points.
L Michigan (last week: L 32-31; this week: L 31-30)
This game remains essentially tied. It will be interesting to see how this prediction changes over the next few weeks. It's flipped twice already -- SPAM had Iowa losing this game at the beginning of the season, winning this game after the MN win, and then losing since then.
L Nebraska (last week: L 35-26; this week: L 31-26)
Early in the season, SPAM had UNL trouncing the Hawkeyes but the gap has steadily narrowed due both to Nebraska's downward spiral and Iowa's stout defense. Note that if this game is played at Kinnick, SPAM has Iowa winning by 1. Memorial Stadium is the only thing preventing SPAM from calling this one for the Hawks.
Final result: 6-6
