Maersk ships are most famous right now for the movie CAPTAIN PHILLIPS and his hijacking story as captain of the Maersk Alabama (BTW, very good movie, far better than the ads would lead you to believe). But Maersk also has some dang impressive machinery that's worth noting. The picture above is of the largest and most powerful diesel engine in the world, the one that powers the Emma Maersk. It's 4 stories tall and 85 feet long. It produces an astonishing 5.5 million foot-pounds of torque. Each of its 14 cylinders is 3 feet in diameter, each producing up to 100,000 BHP. The thing is damn heavy too, weighing over 2,300 metric tons and over 300 tons of that being just the crankshaft. So by any measurements, pretty damn huge and impressive.
To Hamsterdam, all. Iowa had an interesting game to talk about yesterday, there are several posts on the main page to discuss those that are probably the better place for that, but have your fun here as you see fit as always. Lots of NFL out there that I suppose will be discussed, probably some futbol as well.
