Iowa got a grayshirt commit from South Dakota over the weekend: WR/FS Matthew VandeBerg. He'll graduate high school next Spring (2013) but won't join the team until January of 2014. From knowing others that have done similar things, He'll likely take classes at least next Fall, just keep it under full-time status so his eligibility clock doesn't start ticking. He'll have the same amount of time to complete his eligibility as a 2014 recruit would have. The advantage of this for him is that, while he'll have to pay for his first semester of school (so he could even do it in SoDak at in-state rates if he wants to stay home), he'll be on scholarship for nearly six years. If he's smart, he could easily get a Masters. For the Hawkeyes, it allows them to push his scholarship count to the next class and get someone who is, frankly, really skinny another year of body-building.
