Hamsterdam Is Seeing Fire Rainbows

Firerainbow_medium

That crazy picture is a Fire Rainbow. It involves neither fire nor a rainbow, but its name has stuck as it's a far better name than Circumhorizontal Arc. These things are pretty rare, as they require exacting conditions: Cirrus clouds at greater than 20K feet elevation with perfectly horizontal ice sheets on their bottom edge and the sun exactly 58 degrees on the horizon (they're a natural light prism). So if you think you've seen a fire rainbow, you're probably mistaken. But when they do happen, they tend to stick around for at least a half an hour, longer than actual rainbows. And longer than most memes (remember Tiger Blood? Well, get rid of that annoying info and use it for something equally useless like Fire Rainbows)

Enjoy your Hamsterdamming. I'm hoping we can keep the discussion of the Penn State situation on RossWB's Open Thread.
