BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST 74: AND THE BAND PLAYED ON
Oh, come on. You knew you were getting the job. (Credit: Gazette file photo)
Phil Parker is the defensive coordinator, Darrell Wilson makes a lateral move from linebackers to secondary, Reese Morgan somehow ended up as defensive line coach, and Jacobi's probably not wearing pants. There are still three openings on the staff, only two of those openings weren't open this time yesterday, and nobody is quite sure why just yet. We shuffle deck chairs with Morehouse, and you get to hear what happens.

"Jacobi's probably not wearing pants."
Pants are overrated. I was hoping to stick to my pants-less resolution but I guess the office of professional regulation might have a problem with that.

I don't know what KF is thinking.
He’s probably suffering from the lingering effects of Polar Plunge (brain) shrinkage.
Well,
we’re not going to steal one from Ames

Help a brother out
Could someone throw a bone to the lazy bastards amongst us and post the staff lineup as it looked for the Insight Bowl and what it looks like today? The official lineup today, not rumours.
Thx.

I think it was...
HC – Ferentz
OC/QBs – KOK
WR – Campbell
RB – Erb
TE/recruit – Johnson
OL – Morgan
DC – N Parker
DL – Woods
LB – Wilson
DB – P Parker
ST – Wilson
Now it appears to be:
HC – Ferentz
OC – ?
QBs – ?
WR – Campbell
RB – Erb
TE/recruit – Johnson
OL – ?
DC – P Parker
DL – Morgan
LB – ?
DB – Wilson
ST – Wilson?

That's right
Except Erb and Wilson both have special teams duties.

That's a less effective combo than even Phillips & Wilson at this point

I think the "rearranging of deck chairs" tipped people off as well

Like I said, I don't mind Parker.
But having 3 staff openings, moving people on your staff around so you still have 3 staff openings, and then (we think) hiring 2 grad assistants and your son for the 3 vacant spots on a team that has failed to meet expectations 2 years in a row and 5 or 6 out of 7 (depending on how you see 2008) begs for the comparison.

The discussion of salary-tightening
is truly chilling

Nice shot by Morehouse at 13:55 that went completely unnoticed.

Mas Casa's wit and brainpower works faster than he can put down on paper or into words
I mean that in the nicest way possible, but it sometimes does make his blog posts a little scattered.

I think the age difference point is completely irrelevant.
Its not like all successful coaches are in their late 30s, early 40s.
I agree. Coaching is teaching
and knowledge of tactics is, frankly, the easy part to evaluate and assess. Teaching is not merely imparting wisdom. It’s not merely spewing high concepts. It connecting with and motivating people to find value in the information. Which helps them to retain and work with it. And throw into the mix that coaching is reaching out to hyped up late adolescents under stress and no longer in a football bubble (thanks to technology) and, well, it is not what it used to be.
So, I’m of the opinion that generational disconnects are what is separating a lot of teams in college football right now and I think it was a tightening noose around this program. So I think KF had to get some new young blood in here and ideally the young guys will have the right stuff. The risk with hiring potential is that it is just that.
But going out and paying an arm and leg, which apparently we are unwilling to do, for a conventional, old school coach with a long resume seems unneeded. I also don’t think we can afford the young, more proven coaches. So this is the state of Iowa football and KF. KF is not Hayden Fry, clearly. He’s not looking for equals. And he’s not Mike Leach. He’s not living on the edge with a band of merry men. He’s what he is and this is as good as he’s able to get.
