Contacted? Absolutely Offered? Most likely not.

The staff was never interested enough to offer Herrmann and the administration wasn’t going to sign off on Bradley.

Also, the chances were very very good that Phil (and Wilson too, most likely) was going to bolt if someone was hired.

by HoyaGoon on Feb 7, 2012 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

To summarize

1) He is unproven. He’s only been a coach with official positional responsibility for one season. While the New England TEs were impressive this year, and Brian deserves credit, the lion’s share of the reason/credit belongs elsewhere (Brady, Belichick, Brady again, the innate talent of Gronk and Hernandez)

2) Coaching nepotism rarely works out. If he were brought in, Brian would immediately be the heir presumptive (even more so if Kirk is clearing out positional coaches for him). This causes friction with the other, more established coaches and his immediate supervisor, whomever the offensive coordinator turns out to be. If there is disagreement/issues between Brian and the OC, how secure do you think the OC will feel in trying to impose his will/thoughts if Brian can just run to daddy? Kirk would always have the ultimate decision in event of differing opinions, but it’s scary to think what happens if there is inherent bias towards one side in any such disagreement.

For better or worse

I think this is happening. I wonder how much oversight KF has over the OL and if that will increase if Brian comes aboard.

I’m not wearing underwear…what if I pre my pants?

by three and out the kok story on Feb 7, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

This is a terrible idea

especially if neither Woods and/or Raih are elevated to official positional coaches. It will be, effectively, Kirk clearing people out of the way so that his son can take over for him, eventually. I’m not a fan of these moves.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Feb 7, 2012 5:34 PM CST up reply actions

I think if Brian comes in to coach OL…
Soup gets OC and QBs
Woods gets LBs
Raih gets WRs

by 99FormationsButFourWideAin'tOne on Feb 7, 2012 5:37 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Why wouldn't Soup get OC and WR

by three and out the kok story on Feb 7, 2012 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, because clearly KF puts so much stock in background as positional coaches

See former Oline now Dline coach Reese Morgan or college football LB, secondary coach Darrell Wilson

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Feb 7, 2012 5:44 PM CST up reply actions

I think it might be simpler for a former QB coach to move to WR.

Doc and Morehouse made a good point when the mentioned that OCs generally work with the OL or QB because those are the positions which influence the offense the most. Giving Soup QB and OC duties wouldn’t be overly outrageous while Riah moves on to WR coach.

by The Mexican't on Feb 7, 2012 5:47 PM CST up reply actions

Or not

KOK wasn’t the QB coach when he first got here, that was Chuck Long. Granted his work ethic doomed the experiment, but that doesn’t mean that KF wouldn’t have Raih coach the QBs while Soup handles the WRs

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Feb 7, 2012 5:49 PM CST up reply actions

It isn't so much a question of Riah to WR

It is Soup to QBs. I get that you need the OC and QB on the same page. However, I would think that there are so many mechanics involved in throwing that you need someone with experience in that specific area. I think the same point applies to other position coaches, but it just seems so much a larger part of the QB coaches job.

I’m not wearing underwear…what if I pre my pants?

by three and out the kok story on Feb 7, 2012 5:54 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, I've often seen Soup talking to Stanzi and Vandy while pointing to the field and making throwing motions (and pointing some more)

so I didn’t think they were just shooting the shit on the sidelines.

by IAinCA on Feb 7, 2012 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

He isn't Joe Philbin

but he’s done a decent job with the Oline. And has ZERO experience coaching the Dline/defenses generally. I’d rather have Woods coaching the D-line.

And, though this is still speculation so caveats galore, I really don’t like the idea of bringing in a guy with exactly one year of positional coaching responsibility whose only qualification is his last name as the O-line coach and the dauphin presumptive.

Nicely done with the dauphin drop.

If KF is the OL guru wouldn't Brian be very familiar with O-Line theory.

I mean he did play center under KF and has probably been shooting the shit about Olines with his dad for forever. I don’t think Kirk would put in a position where failure was an option or if he didn’t think his son was ready. Having his 1 son being the position coach for another son, that has to be something Kirk would revel in.

Which is interesting

Brian’s current (former?) boss, Bill Belichick, basically grew up in the office of his coach father.

BB does NOT hand out gimme jobs. He gave Brian the TE job because he thought he’d earned it. Being a Ferentz may have gotten him in the door, but he has had to prove himself.

Generationally, y'all are about 15 years younger than me (6 degrees of separation)

But it is neat – and sometimes really weird – posting about high school/college stuff here because you start to bump into people that actually know you – Iowa isn’t that big.

I’ve chatted with a few of you on here before about Iowa high school jazz competitions in the late 70s – I was the guitar player for Roosevelt from 77-80 – and I remember walking across Iowa’s campus as a sophomore in 81-82 and have people come up to me and say “Hey, aren’t you (fill in the blank?) – you guys had a great band!”

I worked the kitchen at Burge for pocket money, serving food, and I had people recognize me who were standing in the serving line… the hilarious thing was I didn’t recognize most of them because they went to small town schools and would see us compete at the festivals but in a different division than theirs, but from 77-80 Roosevelt, Hoover, and Valley had very, very good jazz bands and we were very competitive with each other… it was funny, everyone hated Hoover – mostly because Ron Bantani, their band director, had them playing the same three songs the entire festival season to the point they had them memorized so of course they played them great. Jansen, our director, insisted that we play different sets and actually Learn something in the process, so there was some friction there. Hoover beat us in the 79 finals doing that same three songs thing – we were a little too ambitious (shrug). Anyway, we were friends with the Valley band as we had a common enemy (Hoover) and the Valley kids didn’t act like huge dicks when we played against each other. They just wanted to hear good music.

We didn’t do State in ‘80 because our whole marching went to Florida during Spring Break and State Jazz Championships were right after – I think we would have won anyway, even with a week off, we had an awesome ensemble that year, but c’lest la vie.

If you were in high school jazz band in the late 70s, and went to the competitions, you know who I am :)

I was on The Torch at CRKennedy

and I remember that feature (we subscribed to several eastern Iowa high school pubs).

Also, we used to drool over west high’s style (very hipster- it was hipster before hipster- at the time) and enjoyed a lot about the city high paper too (especially the writing).

I went to Journalism Camp at the University of Iowa the summer before my senior year (yup, j-nerd with a focus on photojournalism though I was a writer at the time) and we were all drooling over several papers from around the midwest and both Iowa City public schools were among them.

my favorite memory, perhaps ever

is of an encounter at a fraternity conference. My roommate in my chapter was news editor of the campus newspaper. I made some references to my high school newspaper and its high quality. He sort of laughed me off. Then we were at a conference in Lincoln, and a guy from GW said, “wait. You wrote on the Little Hawk? we loved that paper.” It was weird. we rolled up to the NHSPA conference in san francisco, and one of our columnists had groupies….

WSS had a nice layout; I was more conservative. The runner-up for exec basically wanted the LH to look like the Utne Reader; I was glad the other guy got it. Because I am boring.

That feature was amazing. Man, was that an expletive-filled critique.

Makes no sense

Wilson played LB in college, and has never coached defensive backs, at any level. Why the sudden change? Unless he’s really the Special Teams coach with a secondary responsibility as the Secondary coach, which will really be Parker.

by HoyaGoon on Feb 7, 2012 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Ferentz played linebacker and was a standout offensive line coach in the pros.

Soup was a defensive back at Michigan, then became a standout wide receivers coach.

I think there’s a fair amount of flexibility when it comes to position coach responsibilities/assignments.

I agree

but not this late in their respective careers. Wilson has been a defensive, and LB coach, for a LONG time. I know coaches sometimes have to move around (see e.g. Kaz) but this just seems odd given how long they’ve been doing what they’ve been doing, to suddenly have everyone move one seat to their left.

I'm actually wondering if some of the current coaches agreed to stick around until next year before leaving

(they’ve worked this hard at continuity, I don’t think they want Iowa to have to start all over and endure a 1998-99 again) so I’m wondering if the coaches that were leaving were moved to less permanent positions, while the ones who will be here were put in positions that KF thought they’d excel at, where they could do well long term (like 6-8 years).

That could be a partial explanation

what with the rumors that Reese Morgan was going to retire soon and Wilson, presumably, being less than thrilled about getting passed over.

In the On Iowa podcast, Morehouse mentioned how this is kind of Ferentz’s last shot, he has to get these hires right or he really risks the same fate that befell Hayden in his last years (best assistants gone, replacements nowhere near their level). Maybe, however, it is a multi-year/step (this year and next) process.

by WaterlooChazz on Feb 7, 2012 10:28 PM CST up reply actions

I most certainly do not.

By all accounts Tom Bradley said he wasn’t going to be coaching this year, only a head coaching job. We signed 24 recruits, it was a very solid recruiting class in general and I don’t recall us missing out on anybody we thought we would get, besides Curry but that was more Kaz I am assuming. We don’t know what the process was, maybe he was really looking for an outside hire and it didn’t work out. Maybe the position coach changes had to go into effect for it to work out, and could have been contingent on whether Brian Ferentz was going to come back to coach the OL. If we would have lost a bunch of recruits because of the uncertainty I would agree with him, but alas we didn’t.

by clay-born to party on Feb 7, 2012 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

I don't really see

how the uncertainty could have been a positive. It may not have hurt us as some expected, but I don’t see how it helps us.

And it sets up Phil to look like a second-choice.

I don’t hate Phil, and I pretty much expected this in the week or two after Norm retired. I just didn’t expect it to take 2 months.

Really, I think most of us realize this was the most likely outcome once Norm retired. That it took this long is surprising and I’d be somewhat interested to find out why.

Phil is clearly a good positional coach. See Morehouse’s piece:

Parker, 48, has put 12 former Hawkeyes in the NFL. Cornerback Shaun Prater will make it 13 when he’s drafted in April. Safety Jordan Bernstine could raise that to 14 if he makes a squad.

If this is the sum total of what happens (plus Brian Ferentz is brought in, and Raih and Woods are elevated), then there will be absolutely no “new” blood in the program, no fresh or different way of looking at things. And simply moving people around won’t fix that, it will only mask it.

Any of these moves, individually, I don’t necessarily have a problem with, but it’s a case where the total is less than the parts. There are some larger, structural issues I think with Iowa football right now, and this does nothing but offer more of the same.

Meh, I guess I'm just not as angry about it as others.

Seems to me that demanding a coach have inside knowledge of a position before taking a job is unnecessary. Morgan was a LB in college but never coached on the defensive side of the ball. As Ross noted above, Ferentz was a LB and excelled as an OL coach and Soup played defensive back before becoming a highly regarded WR coach.

These guys have massive football knowledge, I don’t think it’s fair to assume that they have to coach only at positions at which they have experience.

As others have noted, this is the worst of all possible worlds.

Not only to we take a wrecking ball to one of the few positive qualities that Iowa football had over virtually every other major program, the vaunted STAFF CONTINUITY, but now we don’t even get any fresh blood and new ideas to shake up the stagnant pool that is the Iowa football offices.

by rupertj on Feb 7, 2012 6:39 PM CST up reply actions

The point of continuity is that you have the same people

in the same positions performing the same functions for a long period of time, allowing people them and those around them to become accustomed to their roles.

They have clearly taken the snow globe of Iowa football and turned it upside down.

by i_love_iowa on Feb 7, 2012 6:42 PM CST up reply actions

Why fix what's not broken?

I think most of the positional coaches have been rather successful at their primary responsibility (Wilson with the LBs, Morgan with the Oline). Why move them? Doing so might make things better, but there is a higher degree of probability that it will fail/not be successful

Outside sales, while your girlfirend is good at it, is probably something completely different than going from one side of the line of scrimmage to the other. I agree a bit with I_love-Iowa.

If Phil isn’t coaching DBs, and Soup isn’t coaching WRs, that will be two changes that are not staying with perceived strengths.

To a certain extent, so would be changing Wilson’s and Morgan’s position responsibilities.

And, if the only true “outside” addition is Brian Ferentz, then this does smack of rearranging a lot of shit just to bring him in. I’m not sure I like that. (I want to bring Brian back into the program, but I’m not sure everyone else has to play musical chairs to make it happen.)

there's very little similar in technique between offensive line and defensive line

by tyger1147 on Feb 7, 2012 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think anyone is saying otherwise

the key is that at this point in their careers, Wilson and Morgan have been coaching their respective positions for over a decade. That is a long time for things to get ingrained, and former knowledge to atrophy. It’s one thing to jump around from position to position as a young coach, you almost have to be flexible in order to get the job, it’s another thing entirely later in your career. That’s true of any job, the entry-level guy may jump around departments a bit, he has to in order to be hired and fill whatever need there is; but over time, you develop expertise in a particular field and tend to narrow your focus, which makes it harder to jump to a different department entirely later on in your career. Now, Wilson coached defensive backs at Rhode Island from 1996-1998 and Morgan has coached a lot of different positions earlier in their careers. There’s hope that they retained some expertise at these, but it’s a pretty big gamble. I hope it pays off but I’m not optimistic.

The chuck long complaint is odd

Those DBs had a lot of INTs. I recall the secondary being pretty good when he was running it.

by nhradar on Feb 7, 2012 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

Why wouldn't P. Parker do DC and DB's?

Norm was DC and LB’s. So is Phil P going to ONLY be DC and not do any position work? The great thing about replacing Norm, to my mind, was that it might free up a spot for someone to concentrate solely on QB or ST’s. But if Phil P is not going to do a position, that’s less of an option.

I admit surprise at Morgan moving to DL, and Woods not getting that. Woods to LB makes sense, though. Campbell to OC seems destiny, but couldn’t he still do WR’s as OC? Then you have Raih at QB—unless I’ve already run out of room for him. Wow, never thought we’d have so many changes even if we didn’t promote from within. Crazy.

And what was with the delay? Did we get turned down a bunch a times?

These are obviously the "different scenarios" that KF was talking about

in the signing day presser. He clearly did not go out and interview anyone during the month and a half after Norm announced his retirement. He might have made a feeler to call to Herrmann after the Super Bowl, and upon being shot down, immediately defaulted to fill.

by i_love_iowa on Feb 7, 2012 6:12 PM CST reply actions

There's only a handful of them that coached in the Super Bowl.

And after 2 months, this gets announced less than 48 hours after the big game.

by i_love_iowa on Feb 7, 2012 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

Again, making a reach based entirely on rumors.

If we want to make assumptions, then maybe Ferentz didn’t want to derail his signing day PC with coaching news.

As for the delay, it could simply be that Ferentz wanted to be diligent in his search and reinforce his confidence in the gut reaction that everyone had (Parker to DC).

I’m with Hoya in that I think Parker should have been announced earlier. Even still, announcement today doesn’t necessarily equate to failure to hire a LB coach away from an NFL team.

okay

so I think Raih, B Ferentz and Woods could do some damage on the recruiting trail

seriously?

by PSD on Feb 7, 2012 6:14 PM CST reply actions

Mostly okay with this

I wanted Tom Bradley as DC, but I liked Parker more than Hermann. He’s been a great position coach for years and spent over a decade studying under Norm, I think he’s more than earned a shot.

Morgan to d-line is weird, but I think going from offensive line to defensive line coach is actually a pretty smooth tradition (Kaz was a former offensive lineman and seemed to handle the transition well). It’s not like LeVar Woods was experienced with the d-line either and that was the other alternative. I also really like the idea of Brian Ferentz coaching the o-line. He was a smart player, he seemed to impress the Pats a lot in his time there, and it’s hard to think of a better pedigree for a future offensive line coach than Kirk Ferentz’s son.

The Wilson thing is a little weirder since he’s been with the linebackers for so long, but he is a former defensive back, and I would guess that Parker can help him out a lot (while also freeing Wilson to do more with special teams). And it frees up Woods to coach a position he’s more familiar with, assuming that go that direction (though it is odd that he spent the last several months telling recruits that he was coaching the d-line).

You don't see it?

Nobody told Hoya how to act except you. What we were doing was having a discussion. Hoya apologized (unnecessarily) because (as I understand it) he felt he was being misinterpreted. What you then did was tell him how to act. While on your silly little rant that does nothing to foster further discussion you told him “Don’t apologize…anyone that’s telling you you shouldn’t act a certain way is dumb.”

As has been pointed out, the people that you’re attacking are the ones that are NOT losing their minds over this move. Meanwhile, you’re upset. Your panties are in a wad because of the way others are acting in their fandom. You’re the one acting emotionally, which makes rationalizing with you an exercise in futility according to your counselor’s advice.

We’ve butted heads and you may just think that I’m being an asshole and have some vendetta, and if that’s how you feel, then I apologize. I honestly do try not to argue with you. I just think the “Fuck them” comment was entirely unnecessary and doesn’t make any sense.

early on in Ferentz’s tenure when (2002-2004) Iowa was pretty damn good at special teams. I’m cautiously optimistic about him being primarily responsible for the ST (assuming that Parker has de facto responsibility for the secondary) going forward

what needs to be remembered is that as infuriating as the last two years have been defensively in the fourth quarter, the most consistently effective part of Iowa football has been the defense. I hope Parker is more effective at teaching blitz strategies and then using them. I hope he’s given the freedom we all assumed Norm had, if not more. I also hope he has his own ideas of stoping spread run/pass threat teams. Because with Ohio State hiring Meyer, that’s just one more we gotta deal with in time.

Did we really think Ferentz was going outside the box on this one?

OL coach

a couple months ago I threw out AJ Blazek’s name on Twitter and I’ve seen it thrown around a little bit today. I asked Morehouse about it and he thought he needed more “seasoning.” He’s at Winona State, former Iowa GA.

seriously?

To make a tree

don’t you need to have assistants going off elsewhere and becoming head coaches? I don’t see how any of the moves today lead to anything like that. Doesn’t mean they’re not sensible, though, the point is to win games not build a tree.

The Gazette keeps making masterful headline photo choices.

Seriously, though, I think Parker’s a solid choice. I wonder about the whole Morgan to D-line thing and what prompted that, but he’s a very capable coach from what I’ve heard. I’m surprised he’s still at Iowa as a position coach. The idea of Brian Ferentz to Iowa is very nepotism-y, but, hey, if it works, I won’t complain. The last time Iowa fans judged coaching hires before their first day on the job, Kirk Ferentz was a giant mistake and Iowa was about to become a basketball school. So, 0/2. I’ll let these hires flesh themselves out.

You know, everyone did. I did.

But none of knew him. No one really studied what he was about. Once we learned all that it seemed like a ridiculous hire. That’s why I hold Barta accountable. Hiring is an art.

With regard to Brian Ferentz, let’s be honest. If his name were Brian Schembechler and everything else were the same, we’d be wondering why we can’t get an up and coming young coach like him to look at us. I find the whole angst about nepotism silly. He’s proved himself more than enough. I won’t bore everyone with the number of successful coaches who were sons of great coaches (Lane Kiffin, Brian Shottenheimer, Nick Saban for God sakes, and on and fucking on).

He didn't even do that in their first playoff run

Sanchez mostly played like crap, but the team moved on because they had a stellar defense. He did put together a couple good games in the 2010 playoffs but that is a hell of a sample size issue. Overall his results have been very bad.

in 2007 Eli Manning was the 25th rated passer in the NFL

and he won a super bowl. he had a great 4 game sample size that contradicted his 16 game sample size. today, he’s perceived as a great QB. Was he the guy who went nuts in the 2007 post season or the guy that was rated lower than Kyle Boller in the regular season?

by StoopsMyAss on Feb 7, 2012 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

He was a mediocre QB who went on a really good four game run

That stuff happens. He has since developed into a pretty good one, and was great for most of this season. If he’d regressed to his pre-Super Bowl level no one would be calling him a great QB now.

There are also plenty of examples of guys who had one great game and then went on to do absolutely nothing else. So I’m not really sure what you think the example of one guy proves.
