Wait, What? Ken O'Keefe To Leave For Miami Dolphins?

This is not hard news -- yet. What it is a rumor with a lot of smoke. The rumor in question is Ken O'Keefe leaving Iowa to become the Quarterbacks Coach for the Miami Dolphins (and new head coach Joe Philbin, who worked with O'Keefe on the Iowa staff for several years early in Ferentz's tenure).

Sayeth Morehouse:

Um... wow.

EDIT: And confirmation from the Des Moines Register, too. It's really happening, people.

We'll have much more on this as soon as we get more information.

trepidation?

There’s probably some 20-letter German word for it.

I have to say that I don’t really have much fear in this. I’ve wanted KOK to go for some time now, the sole reason I’ve been OK with him staying on is that it’s KF’s choice and I’ll back him on his coordinator choices.

I’m excited for the possibility of an offense that finishes in the top half of the B10 most years.

Yeah.

Many people here thought KOK never “stood up” to Kirk enough to demand more pizazz or change. To me, I doubt Reese Morgan or Brian Ferentz does any better, and might not be as competent as KOK. If Erb gets the promotion, half the Internetz will implode. Maybe Soup is ready, or maybe not. I don’t think Eric Johnson is ready.

Yeah, after some of the recent posts and coaching examinations

I just started to realize that he has actually produced some good QBs.

If a new OC comes in and doesn’t make much of a difference with play calling (and whatnot) will people (realizing that the problem wasn’t KOK) start to clamor for KF to go?

Maybe not as OC

But say, maybe Erik Campbell gets promoted to OC (which I would be so totally in favor for), making room for at least 1 new offensive position coach. Brian Ferentz could certainly come in under that scenario. Whether he wants to or not right now when he’s just really starting to get some recognition in the NFL, who knows.

So Fitzgerald wasn’t expecting it again? Ken surprised him with a second, predictable, obvisouly visable formation for the same play? Or was there supposed to be a DE unblocked running full speed at Stanzi?

Technically not correct.

An Iowa win in Columbus would have given them an OUTRIGHT B1G title, but a win over jNW (a healthy Stanzi probably wins that game) and a loss in C-bus would have given Iowa a shared B1G title with OSU at 7-1 (just like 2002 and 2004).

by hawkinsandmelrose on Feb 3, 2012 10:21 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

You do realize that that was BY FAR the best game

that Vandy has ever played, right? He actually gave us a chance to win. We gave up 250 yards rushing, missed a chip shot FG, Stross dropped at least 1 TD pass (if not more) and our gutless, chickenshit of an HC decided to sit on the ball with a minute and half and 2 TOs left at the end of the game.

There were dozens of reason why Iowa lost that game, and QB play was about #2334544 on the list.

THat game was classic -- we now know -- Vandy

streaky, questionable, mediocre, bold, all in one game. Of course, he’s since been scouted and KOK’d.

Everyong had low expectations for Vandy and our chance to win in that game.

He exceeded them. So that game just feels like his best game.

I think we all had reasonably high expectations for him after that, which have been somewhat brought back to reality since.

by HawkeyeInExile on Feb 4, 2012 1:11 AM CST up reply actions

Didn't DJK give us a kickoff return for a TD in that game, also?

So, I guess Vandy helped put up about 17 points in that game. Which was still a lot better than Pryor, but not exactly an overwhelming day, either.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Feb 4, 2012 6:46 AM CST up reply actions

That game is a totally forgettable loss without DJK's return

Ironically, that play seems to be often forgotten when people talk about how great Vandy was that day. And though he exceeded expectations, he wasn’t quite great. Without that kickoff return, I’d give him slim chances to come back down 14.

But that’s all hypothetical. And old news.

Kinda sucks that some of my favorite Iowa games are OT losses.

Anyone with any kind of ambition hates getting passed over when a company hires outside.

It basically means your boss thinks you’ve plateaued, and if you want to advance in your career, you have to go elsewhere.

So, I don’t fault these guys for leaving in a situation like this even if it does suck ass for the program. And I have a hard time believing we go super-vanilla with in-house hires right now. So we may be in for a few more assistant defections.

by HawkeyeInExile on Feb 3, 2012 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

Or perhaps some of the coaches don't feel like the University has their best interests in mind anymore.

Maybe it was the Coker thing, or maybe something else.

But we can’t make conclusions. This staff has been together a long time, and for some of them it was promotion to coordinator or bust. If they didn’t get the job and feel they want to go add a new accomplishment to their life’s work, then I can completely understand. In fact, I hope that’s ALL it is, and not a problem within the program/university.

Not necessarily.

It might just be a few of the older assistants/coordinators deciding that they had a great run together, and that they’d like to spend more time around family/grandkids rather than trying to talk 18-year-olds into sacrificing personal interests for a team gain, and then having those 18-year-olds jump ship when they don’t get their way.

waiting until now, when the coaching carousel everywhere else has stopped (meaning the pool of available hires is largely comprised of the undesirable) is not a good time to be undergoing a major staff overhaul.

First of all, good for KOK. I don’t necessarily want to celebrate his leaving the program, because I don’t think Iowa’s offensive ineptitude is entirely KOK’s fault. That said, I’m excited to see what a new OC might mean for Iowa football.

Really feels like a win-win here.

Putting aside that he's not leaving an NFL coordinator position for a college one

I think he might leave for a job with a little more security

but I have to say I know little about Philly’s inner workings on the offensive coaching. It’s just my quick observation that they were excellent on offense for many years when he was coaching that side, and their offense even took a dip the year he moved over to defense. But you may be right that the large bulk of the acclaim should go to Andy Reid.

I think you are seriously overestimating the salary of a first time NFL position coach

It’s hard to find numbers on it, but I would pretty surprised if they’re making twice what he made here. WR coach is pretty far down the totem pole.

by NorseHawk on Feb 3, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

KOK's Iowa Salary

was 260K/year. Position coaches in the NFL are averaging 400K a year or more now…

by FlyingDutchman1 on Feb 3, 2012 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

A quick search of the Googles pulls up at least 2 old articles claiming that some position coaches are making $400k

This LA Times article from 2005, and an article from Len Pasquerelli suggests the same type of incredible increase in assistant wages.

There’s probably a good chance that KOK is making, at least, a lateral move in terms of wages while also getting his foot in the door at the NFL level.

by The Mexican't on Feb 3, 2012 5:49 PM CST up reply actions

Well "some" isn't really average

It might be close to a lateral move in salary, but I think it’s probably a step back from OC for a major college team in terms of prestige. He has his foot in the NFL door now, but at his age I don’t know that WR coach is really the ticket to a huge promotion down the line. I guess we’ll see.

Yeah, let's just completely discount the fact

that DJK was playing alongside the greatest WR in Iowa history for his last 3 years.

And he still practically doubled Mo in yards and catches.

What’s better? Jerry Rice’s position coach, or Wayne Chrebet’s?

On one dinner I had in Puerto Nuevo, Baja Mexico

I went to the bathroom to wash my hands before the meal. The bathroom was small and sparse. No towels (no problem, wipe my hands on my jeans), a squat “toilet” (also not a problem), but having no soap to wash up after a long day in Mexico was a killer. I got back to the table and asked the waiter for soap. He nodded and returned with some of the best tortilla soup I’ve ever had (sopa). This made me happier than having actual soap.

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

I didn't really take exception to your comment

Soup is doing a great job. If McNutt isn’t the best Iowa receiver of all-time, he is, at the very least, one of my all-time favorites. And while I also like DJK despite how he ended his career, I think his stats benefited from the phenoma Chazz described above. He was our only option for a while there.

But I’m also a big fan of Hinkel, Mo Brown, CJ Jones, Solomon and a few others. So I don’t think we were devoid of talent pre-Soup either.

by HawkeyeInExile on Feb 4, 2012 1:01 AM CST up reply actions

let's not forget

That Chuck Long is without debate our best quarterback in the last 80 years(Post Nile). Long played in a pass happy Hayden offense while both DJK and the Nutter set records after that period. I don’t think it is a stretch to say those last two played in more a “run first” offensive mind set.

We have had great receivers in the past and Soup is making our current guys much better.

I think they all know they won’t be around forever, and Ferentz is going to bring in people are the next group of coaches to coach here. Fry had a try, there was mention of a Ferentz Sappling earlier….I think there’s some merit to that. He always says if it’s a good move he’d support it, and I never thought I’d see Ken leave.

Like I said, he wants to leave a program in tact, and having a bunch of 65 year old coaches isn’t the way to do it.

unless someone is promoted to take over as coach, pretty much anybody that takes over will bring an entirely new staff anyway. Ha!

Good write-up too. This part, I think, could be true:

But my feeling was always that the more Hawkeye fans would have been exposed to O’Keefe, the more they would have liked him. He is very intelligent and well-read, has a good sense of humor, and strikes me as being plenty humble.

We barely knew the guy (because KF limited the coordinators’ exposure to the media) and yet he was everyone’s punching bag. I don’t know…but I guess we’ll soon have an idea where the playcalling buck stopped.

"Hi, I'm Bob Executive. Which way to business?"

by IPeeBlackAndGold on Feb 3, 2012 6:32 PM CST up reply actions

Well the general offensive scheme was almost certainly on Kirk

He’s said a bunch of times that this is the style of offense he prefers, and KOK ran a much more wide open offense in his stops prior to Iowa. The play-calling within that was probably mostly on O’Keefe though.

I definitely do not doubt that he was a really good guy though.

No, but you might cut a guy a bit more slack if you realize he's likable

rather than if he’s some quasi-anonymous guy we see once a week, I guess, is the point. I don’t know if I actually have a point.

I don’t think he deserves all the criticism he gets, and starting with a fresh coordinator could be good, but it could also be rocky for a year or two. So my feelings are all mixed-up.

by therealCatnuts on Feb 3, 2012 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

That's probably true too.

Being a good guy endeared him to the coaching staff (and recruits-he was evidently a good recruiter, too), and maybe kept him around longer, but we as fans didn’t get to see much of that.

I’m not celebrating his moving on, but I’m not mourning it either I guess. I’ll just grab a beer and see what happens next…

Do you suppose Brian wants to come to Iowa?

I like my dad, but I’d probably want to make my own way. But that’s just me. Maybe Brian working for Belichick shows his willingness to leverage his dad’s influence (and I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with that).

by TheCornballer on Feb 3, 2012 6:41 PM CST reply actions

Right now, it is a bit of a tough decision.

B Ferentz has had quite a bit of success and promotions in the last 3 or 4 years. And, he’s the oldest child (or son, at least) and, having spent his childhood in other places, may or may not love Iowa as much as Kirk possibly does? If Brian works hard and things go well, he could be head coach of New England in 5 or 8 years.

But, if he loves Iowa, and he is really confident in his abilties, then maybe he could do the same here, particularly with the possible “nepotism/Dad-sets-me-up-to-take-over” addition. But, he’s still going to have to wait 4 or 5 or 8 years.

Personally, if I’m Brian, I think I have to take the Patriot’s job as far as it can take me. How often do you get a Hall-of-Fame QB throwing to your TEs? Also, you can get a college head-coaching gig later on from being an NFL assistant. But, you probably won’t get an NFL head gig unless you’ve had sustained success as a college head coach, or as an NFL assistant.

Also, heavy hangs the head that wears the crown, and whatnot.

Weird comparison but

How did that succession plan work out for Jay Paterno?

Not saying there will be another situation like the PSU one (please God no) but if KF would have a couple of bad seasons at the end the prospects of BF taking over would be remote at best.

I would guess that if he really, really wanted to be Iowa’s HC he should ride the NFL for as long as possible and jump with a succession plan in place when he joins the staff.

Let's not forget that Brian has been, officially, an assistant coach

for all of one season. Prior to this season, he was an “offensive coaching assistant” (helping with the TEs I believe) but did not have position-specific responsibilities and authority until this year. Now, it seems the Belichick/the Patriots organization thinks highly of BF, but it’s way, WAAAAY to early for him to be realistically thought of as an offensive coordinator at the major college level.

by rupertj on Feb 4, 2012 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Ok, let's point out numerous failings

Jim Caldwell was the head coach of Wake Forest from 1993-2000. He had a career record of 26-63 with one winning season (7-5 in 1999).

Also, Peyton Manning is a phenomenal talent. Being his QB coach does not make you a good coach. It makes you lucky. I will say that I may have exaggerated my point above saying the Colts’ record this year is all his fault. It was a combined effort of him and Irsay not having a capable backup QB or decent running game ready.

by Jon Berg on Feb 4, 2012 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

While there is no overstating how important talent is

position coaches wouldn’t exist if they weren’t important. How many pitchers went from wash-outs to staff aces under Dave Duncan at St. Louis? Different sport but perhaps the position most similar when talking about the “you either have talent or don’t” argument.

I say we hire coach Bud Kilmer for oc and dc

If he sucks, at least his daughter is hot. Honestly I hope we get a coach comfortable calling plays for a pro style offense. If not I hope we get to modern football and get a spread coach that is allowed to do his thing. Kf is more of a pro coach in the fact that he keeps his assistants on a tight leash. I think he would fare better letting his assistants do their job, and just step back and run the day to day stuff, instead of every aspect of the team. Just my opinion, whatever happens next year will be fun. Best of luck to ken in his future endeavors

But I really don’t get it. How many 28 year old OC’s are there out there? Is he really an experienced and qualified candidate after a few years with the Patriots?

If he got the job, he’d be working entirely in his dad’s shadow. If things worked out people would still say he only got the job because of his dad. That hardly benefits BF in developing his career. And, if things didn’t work out, they’d probably both get canned.

I know in my heart KF will not have the balls to do this

but we are so late in the hiring game he might have to hire his son and then use him as a beard, by giving another on the staff the title while Brian really calls the shots.

Brian has spent 4 (maybe) years at football's MIT

He’s worked tape, scouted and worked as a position coach. Playcalling duties are easier (somewhat) in college than in the pros. Four years with Belichick are worth 6 or 8 elsewhere.

I’d feel OK if Kirk handed him the playchart, especially if Iowa gets an old hand to call defenses.

Just as long as he can get the play call in

with more than 8 seconds left on the play clock, we will be doing okay

The only one that's been absolutely terrible is Weis

I think there’s a lot of good to be said for McDaniels and Crennel, but they may have had their accomplishments squashed by the fact that they’re not Belichick (and they don’t have Tom Brady)

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

Really?

He coached under Al freaking Davis, which has been shown to be such a dysfunctional organization that any coaching accomplishments or failures there must be swept under the rug (see: Jackson, Hue – fired after 1 season at 8-8, and yes, I realize Davis is gone, but the crazy remains). And now, he’s got USC back in the title hunt. The dude can coach.

Numbers are great when you have Leinart, White, Bush, Jarrett his first year

And no Trojan fan was particularly excited about the Sark/Kiffin playcalling. A lot of people thought it cost them mNTs two years in a row.

Most fans were not excited about his hire, but are much happier now.

Being a crappy pro, doesn't mean you sucked in college

Unless you’re saying Brad Banks was shit and Tom Brady was the best Michgan QB ever. Leinart has the accuracy but he doesn’t have any arm strength to be a pro QB.

When Kiffin and Sark took over for Chow, Leinart had already won the Heisman and Bush finished 5th. It’s not hard to produce numbers when you’ve got that kind of talent returning. Also most of his playcalling that season was as predictable as KOK’s but KOK didn’t have Bush to run a reverse.

I'm arguing those guys were made good by good coaching and good playcalling

as was banks. Once left solely to their talent, they came up short.

I would agree with you if they hadn't been great college players before Kiffin

The year before Kiffin became co-OC, he was a WR coach and Leinart won the Heisman. I would argue that Leinart had all the same weapons returning from the previous year when he was coached by Norm Chow (who has coached at least 3 Heisman winning QBs). Kiffin and Sark did nothing but almost lose to ND and a couple others and lose to Texas and Oregon State.

I don't know what team you are talking about

because if they had beaten TExas just about everyone in the football world was ready to call them the greatest team in college football history. Leinart lost to Bush for the Heisman, finished third. Notre Dame was ranked #9 and playing at home and they still beat them. They had a bullseye all year and lost on one of the greatest performance in Rose Bowl history, not because of their offense, but because of their defense.
