Illinois 65, Iowa 54: Post-Game Airing of Grievances
Well, that sucked. Another game at Assembly Hall, another frustrating loss. Iowa turned the ball over roughly a billion times and shot approximately negative one billion percent* for much of the game, while Illinois remembered that Meyers Leonard (a) existed and (b) was totally unguardable by Iowa. Dammit.
* Non-Matt Gatens players only.
Here's your thread for airing your grievances about the game, as well as your open thread for the Oscars, NBA All-Star Game, Intervention, Walking Dead, or whatever the hell else you want to watch this evening.
The standard open thread rules apply: no links to illegal online streams, no porn, no religion, no politics, no porn, no slurs, no douchebaggery, etc.

Let me guess
That scenario in the picture wasn’t a foul?
They say you're a pitcher, you're sure not much of a dresser. We wear caps and sleeves on this level, son.
Clearly that's just tremendous defensive effort.

Bryan Cranston is involved in an ABC comedy.
It might only be a guest role, but it shocks me that he’s anywhere near it.
The Twins, Wild, Hawkeyes and Timberwolves all contain W's, but lack Wins, while the Packers and City are without W's and have wins.
I turned over to the Wild game just in time to see them score 2 goals in a minute.

That’s not meant as snark. Sometimes it seems players can handle being shorter and having less reach than defenders and offensive players. Tonight Melsahn just couldn’t.

The Twins, Wild, Hawkeyes and Timberwolves all contain W's, but lack Wins, while the Packers and City are without W's and have wins.
Best movie I saw this year was Melancholia
Too bad Lars von Trier appears to be a raging anti-semite or it might have gotten some love tonight.
Other than that the only nominee I haven’t seen is Tree of Life. I would love to see Hugo win best picture, but I really wouldn’t have a problem with The Help or The Artist. Mostly, I’m easy to please because I don’t really care.

I believe the media coverage about it was people not getting his dry and very absurdist attempt at humor. I heard Terry Gross interviewing Dunst about it on NPR.

But appearances are everything in the world of Oscar politics. So the misunderstanding that led to the appearance is causing that movie to get shafted. I especially feel bad for Dunst who was really really good in it and was finally moving beyond her chipper roles.

But there was a chance I think, since they now take an additional 4 teams
still unlikely, and now it’s a moot point. I think we will beat Nebraska next game, our defense really was pretty solid for the most part, Illinois had like 20 turnovers and they won’t lose many games when the opponent has that many turnovers. I hope so much that we can beat Northwestern at home since it will probably Matty Fresh’s last home game, besides maybe an NIT game.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Tied with jNW at 7-9
So that would be correct given the loss at W-R. So we’ll be the 7,8, or 9 seed. I’ll take a single digit seed in year two of the Fran era. Not sure who of the other teams that could currently finish 10th, 8th, or 9th I’d rather play in the first round. Probably PSU, wouldn’t mind them somewhow clawing up to 10 and playing them on a neutral court.

The Office should've ended after Season 3
The last episode of that season is probably the best of the entire series. It should’ve ended with Jim asking Pam on the date. End it there.

I thought they made them short because they didn’t keep dragging them on and on and on to try and drag ratings out of them. From the few series I’ve seen all the way through they seem to stay funny until the end, but if you think they started awful then I guess this line of arguing doesn’t really help my case.

Of the nominees I’ve seen, The Descendants was the film I liked the most.

Hugo has a shot because it’s source material is about the magic of movie making, and thus these voters may favor it.

They’ve only won 5 of their last 13 games. A few against good teams, but they’re still a losing team.
meh
that's a convenient way to leave out two of the biggest wins this season
They’re 7-9 in the B1G. Not great, but a hell of a lot of teams would do worse.
Their RPI is half derived from a team that was in the 200s before conference play. They’re well below 100 in conference play. So I don’t think their overall RPI accurately reflects the team as it is currently.

by WaterlooChazz on Feb 26, 2012 10:39 PM CST up reply actions
My argument would be
If we are assuming RPI is an accurate indicator, than either
(a) Iowa is worse than 130 other teams and has just played above themselves over the last 16 games, or
(b) Iowa has massively improved and is in the top 100 best teams, but the 200+ nonconference RPI brings them down to the 130 range for the season
Because the last numbers I saw for the conference season had Iowa in the 70ish range for RPI.
You won't never regret this, mister editing man.
by KilometersDavis on Feb 26, 2012 10:47 PM CST up reply actions
Maybe.
But, aside from beating Wisky twice, what do we really have to hang our hat on? IU might be worse than some think. Minny probably is worse than some think. And, even when we were “improved” we still got slapped down by MSU and OSU and jNW, and even managed losses to PSU and Nebby.
That’s why, to me, it will be very important to beat Nebby and at least be competitive with jNW for the whole game.
We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.
by WaterlooChazz on Feb 26, 2012 10:50 PM CST up reply actions
Then why have they lost so many games to teams that aren't in the top 100 in the country?
They are what they are. A young team with talent that doesn’t bring the results night-in, night-out. Take out all the bad losses and great wins, and what are they?
Bad losses – Campbell, Clemson, Nebraska, Penn State
Great wins – Wisconsin, @Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan
And we’ll let them cancel each other out, so to speak. Personally, I do believe every one of those losses is as bad as every one of those wins.
Beaten:
- Minnesota x 2
- Penn State
- Drake
- Boise State
- North Carolina A & T
- IPFW
- Central Arkansas
- Chicago St
- Northern Illinois
Lost to:
- Michigan State
- Ohio State
- Indiana
- Creighton
- Iowa State
- Northwestern
- Purdue x 2
- Northern Iowa
Maybe they are 70th-ish. If you take out the outliers on both sides, I guess there is room for a huge debate on where they are. So… never mind.
meh
fucking SBN shitty formatting and my stupid self for not previewing
I had all the RPIs on there. If you take out any loss against a team ranked below 100 and any win against a team ranked above 25 (take them out as outliers), then they’ve lost to all the teams they’ve played ranked higher than 64th and beaten every team they’ve played ranked worse than 130. Minnesota, at 72 is the only team they’ve played ranked between 70 and 125. What would they do against the likes of Oklahoma State, Cleveland State, Wyoming, Georgia, Old Dominion? The past two wins say they’d beat them. The last three losses (NOT the first three or something from the non-conference) say they’d lose to them.
meh
It's not a convenient way to leave out anything.
The Indiana and Wisconsin win, better wins than losing to Campbell and Clemson are losses?
And of course it’s half-derived (although, no literally, of course, more like 1/3 derived), it’s part of their schedule. Look, if it was JUST their non-conference schedule and they had beaten Nebraska and Northwestern and now Illinois, their RPI would be much better, and I’d say the team is much better. Had they won out to the semis of the B1G Tourney, their RPI would have been much better. But they haven’t.
RPI, reflects what a team has done, and while they’ve won some good games, they’ve lost some bad ones.
Sure, you can say, “If they hadn’t lost those games in non-conference play, they would be much better.”
But I can say, “If they hadn’t swept Wisconsin and Minnesota, they’d be one of the worst schools in the BCS.”
I get it: inconsistent play means the team can actually be good from time to time. I was vocal of this about Ben Gordon in the Bulls. Sure, he was inconsistent, but that meant he could have some really, really good games. But he could also have some stinkers. He wasn’t an overall really good player.
And Iowa isn’t an overall good team. When Gatens isn’t ungodly, Basabe and Cartwright don’t show up and White, McCabe and Marble are merely… meh, they’re a pretty shitty team. When things are good, they look really good. When things are bad, they look really shitty. You can’t ignore the godawful just because there’s been some tremendous in there, too.
meh
I think you missed my point
Why choose the last 13 games for your statistics if not to leave out those two wins?
And perhaps I misunderstood you, but I was under the impression that you meant Iowa’s RPI reflects how good they are. In which case I disagree whole-heartedly for the reasons I posted.
If you meant Iowa’s RPI reflects their performance on the season as a whole, I won’t disagree. But I also don’t think that’s terribly helpful in the context of what happened today.
You won't never regret this, mister editing man.

I think they are as good as they've performed this season.
It’s not like they haven’t just lost to Penn State and Nebraska recently. If they had beaten every team “worse” than them, I’d agree, they are better. But losing to Penn State and Nebraska in the past month tells me that, sure they are probably better than the 200+ they were at the beginning of the year, but I don’t buy they’ve separated themselves from the #125-ish teams that they’ve actually, somewhat recently, lost to, ya know?

Meryl Streep disappears into every role, too. She should have won for Julie and Julia before this.

Oh and if, dear fellow citizens of Hawkeye Nationland, you're looking for a B1G player to hate,
I think we need look no further than The Flying WASP himself, Myers Leonard. Ugh. Even if someone were guarding him, it wouldn’t have mattered. We simply don’t have anyone big enough or strong enough to even slow him down much. Plus, he’s just super hateable.

If the refs don't feel like calling over the back
I’m not sure there is anything Iowa’s post players could do to get a rebound against him. Brommer and McCabe (I think) each had him completely boxed out and he just jumped above them and tipped the ball to someone else. Neither of the Iowa guys could jump high enough to leverage their superior position, either, if that’s what they wanted to try.

Yep. Frustrating as hell to watch.
And the refs were rigoddamndiculous terrible – and it went both ways. Lots of WTF calls, lots of no calls, and of course, in true B1G ref fashion, at least one call overturned by a ref who wasn’t even near the fucking play. Ugh.

Is Woodbury here yet?
Because I really don’t want to see that again.
