Ugh, just got notice that I owe the state $350
of income tax from 2007.. a few years ago the federal government came after me for about $1,500 from that year. I did not know I had to claim money I took from an annuity. What sucks is that I only made like $7,000 that year, i was a student and took the money out to pay tuition.. it is almost all fines. Tax law confuses me, which is why I no longer do my own.

Tax law sucks.
I’ve also completely given it over to somebody who I think knows what they’re doing. Do they really? I don’t even know. I hope so. I’m totally okay with paying taxes, I just hate the convuluted and political quagmire it’s become so that I don’t even know if I’ve ever underpaid or overpaid. Simplify that shit, please.

I guess it just frustrates me that its is 5 years later and I am being asked to pay back in again. And the fact that my income for that year was less than 10,000 and I was a full time student. Also, all of my student loans are at 6.80% so i’m getting my ass kicked there too.

Wife and I are just getting on our feet here, she finished school and started working a few months ago so consolidation is finally a real possibility for us. All of my loans will be paid off next month and then we will get to work on hers but we may go shopping for a better rate

As opposed to my condo. I hate the concept of refinancing. Hey, look, here’s this great rate that you can’t have because the mortgage is underwater. I’ve got great credit and never been late on a payment, much less missed one, but because I’ve been forced to rent it instead of being able to sell, I would need to put up way more money than I have to get the equity to the point where they’ll give me a better rate.
Also, PMI sucks. Here’s the money I have to pay them so that if I default, they’ll make money on foreclosing on me.

renting an apartment until loans are paid down and we have 20% to put down on a place of our own. If that means I do not own a home for a few more years so be it.

The PMI on our place is only $40 a month
If you can get a good rate on a modest house now at these prices…pmi might not be worth avoiding.
But only get a house if you really want all that comes with it.

Mortgage Insurance
Until you have 20% equity, you have to pay a little extra as “insurance” in case you default on the loan.
These days 20% is a f’n lot of money for even an average house so a lot of us ending up paying it for awhile.

Thanks. I’ve been debating on whether or not to join in the housing market. I’m currently a renter, but wish I could create some equity, but I think I might wait and see where my job takes me. Maybe my career might take a left turn instead of a right or whatever.

As someone who lost a house from such a zig
When i expected a zag, i would advise not pulling the trigger if your job path is murky.
I was lucky…i was transferred and had a job still but lost the house since i could not get enough rent and the dc rent i had to pay was high. Comparred to those that lost a house and had no job i was sitting ok.
Even luckier, my fiance also had a house that was more modest, that we could afford to rent out. So now that we made our way back we still have a nice little house…otherwise id be a renter for several yrs.
This is just a cautionary tale…[a boombox is not a toy…/lonely island’d]

that we don’t really want to buy a “first time” home. We want our first place to be the type of house we really want to live in. taking 20% of the price of that will make it much more affordable for us.

Than planning on upgrading like so many people do.
Paying realtor fees and bank fees again, as part of your plan is not for me.
Our house is a starter house, but is in a great location…and i feel we as americans seem to think we need bigger houses when 95% of the time that is just a want. People also seem to forget that kids can share rooms.

I think if you really run the numbers, saving on rent and using that money to put into your roth ira and 401k, would be the better end the long run every time.
That is just financially though. I really enjoy having a house and all that comes with it. So i get some utility from that.

Need some advice on TV/Broadband providers
We currently have ATT’s U-Verse and love it, but it’s not available at the condo we’re moving to in Chicago area. I’m really not interested in whatever local cable monopoly is probably there, so I’m hoping people have good advice on the following:
Verizon FIOS
DirecTV
Dish Network
Do either of the dishes even have broadband or am I stuck with only 1-2 options? I’m terrible at this stuff, so any help is greatly appreciated.

We have Directv
with AT&T broadband. AT&T partners (owns?) Directv, so you can get a small price break signing up with them.
Don’t get me wrong, I think I’d rather have U-verse, but we’re outside their area, and we like Directv better than dish. I have a deep hatred of Comcast, but I see I don’t have to argue you out of that.

DirecTV partners with Qwest/CenturyLink, I think.
Which is what we have. CL is OK for internet; I hated them until last year when we got a new router that improved things. I think I’d still rather have cable, but I don’t want to go back to Comcast/Xfinity for TV.
I would like to try FIOS or U-Verse, but neither was available in my area last time I looked.

I'm in Iowa,
and I used to have Mediacom. Now, I have DirecTV with CenturyLink DSL internet.
It all works pretty good.
It’s a bit pricier than I’d like, after the 9 or 12-month introductory rate.
Also, I was told there would be free installation, and then they had to put up a couple of 3 foot metal poles in my yard for the two dishes (because I got the sports channels), and then recently they switched it all to one dish, so now I have an extra one in the yard. I’m not sure if there would be much for installation costs in a condo.

I ended up going to Great Waters Brewery/Restaurant before the Wild game on Saturday. The beer was good, the place was packed. Apparently people like to go there for beer and meals of food before watching the Wild get beat by Columbus, who I learned is the worst team in the NHL.

here is my plan (and I may have mentioned this before), my wife has a former co-worker who is a NIU booster. Last time I was able to get about 40 tickets from him, great seats. I’m hoping to do the same this year, only getting more. As soon as I know the info (assuming it doesn’t fall through), I’ll post it and find out interest to try to get a BHGP block of seats

I was a bit in front of you, I think I was in the 2nd or 4th row of the Caddy Club's outdoor seating.
I have relatives of relatives who had a son who was an NIU alumnus. I think he had a friend or contact in the NIU athletic department who got the great seats for us (we had a group of about 10 or 12 people there).
I’m really hoping that guy can get us tix again this year, as I have no real desire to sit in the upper deck of Soldier in the hot sun or the rain.

If you don't mind looking dorky
The Bose Quiet Comfort 15s are the best noise-cancelling headphones, hands down. I use mine only on planes and it makes the cabin nearly whisper quiet. They’re quite pricey, though at about $350.
My everyday earbuds that I wear at the coffeshop when working are Bose IE2. (Damn, I sound like a shill for Bose). I absolutely love these, they’re about $100 and the most important thing is that they’re extremely confortable to wear for an hour or more. They’re not very good for ambient noise, though, so I’d recommend either some Sony or Sennheiser earbuds that use the pliable in-ear buds if you’re having a loud commute. Anything around $100 by those two companies is generally excellent sound quality.

I'm an inexpensive headphone purchaser as well, and I really enjoy these
I use them at the office and while doing yard work (no, really) because I hate the Apple headphones, and have a problem with most earbuds.
I’m also going to piggyback on your Roku question because I’ve been looking at them for a couple months and can’t decide if it’s worth purchasing if I still have cable.

Roku:
We have the Apple TV and a TV that has a Roku built-in. The Roku part is awesome. We use Hulu Plus and Netflix streaming a TON, and for only $16/mo combined we watch those more than our cable package that is $75/mo. The only thing we use that for is sports. I think the newest Roku is only $50 and it’s gotten rave reviews by every tech website out there. It’s the size of a hockey puck. It’s truly amazing how great technology has gotten so quickly.

Yeah, I was looking at the newest box as well as some of the more tricked-out ones.
I’m not really sure I need one of the more tricked out ones, though, and $60ish to easily watch Netflix, Amazon, and HBO GO on my TV seems very promising.
