You would've thought Denver won the Super Bowl last night judging the reaction of the fans out here
I saw a fair amount of fireworks shot off around town. People interviewed on local TV were going absolutely ape shit.
Shocking win for the Broncos. Pittsburgh looked beat up and OLD. That team needs some youth in the worst way, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.
Pittsburgh needs some youth and some health on defense.
They were down to about 2-3 good defensive players in that game.
They also need to cut Ike Taylor, because he kinda sucks.

Yeah it was brilliantly set up all game
I think Denver ran on almost every single first down they had yesterday. Great call, great pass, great run and catch.
I’m surprised by Thomas, frankly. I thought he was taken way too early by McDaniels, that he couldn’t run much outside of fly routes (which was basically all he ran at Georgia Tech). He’s developed nicely for them. Denver’s kind of like Detroit in that they’re probably another good off-season or two away from being a consistent competitor.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.
I think Taylor has looked pretty bad in other games, too.
He seems like the weak link in that secondary.

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Weak sauce from Arsenal and Manchester United with their recent signings
They wouldn’t need to bring players out of retirement (Scholes) or back from the wilderness (Henry) if they actually bought players worth a damn in the transfer window. United have failed to replace both Scholes and Roy Keane in the last 6 years. You know – only two of the most influential players of the Premier League era (Keane for his defensive abilities and making those around him better, Scholes for his vision and distribution; easily England’s best central mid of the current era).
Same with Henry. I believe it’s either him or Alan Shearer for best striker of the Premier League era, and yet Arsenal never really replaced him.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.
Now that he's actually had a good run of health, Van Persie has been scoring TONS of goals for Arsenal this year.
I think he’s effectively replaced Henry; the problem is that they have very little depth behind him, which is why they needed to turn to Old Man Henry.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
RVP has been crushing it, both domestically and internationally
If he keeps up this form and has a strong Euro 2012, European and World Player of the Year will be in play next year (not that he’d beat Messi, of course, though Messi’s international form continues to be a mystery). Being in contention for those awards has to be in play for RVP on his current form.
But I’ll still contend neither side adequately replaced those players. Chamakh, Gervinho, Michael Carrick…those guys won’t cut it. As a United supporter, I thought Anderson would, but he’s woefully inconsistent. Carrick hasn’t been the same since the 2009 Champions League final, and he’s been deployed in defense of late. I could go on re: United’s litany of issues, but I won’t.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.
I agree, in general.
I think Van Persie (when healthy) has turned into a very fine replacement for Henry; the problem is that they have failed to find additional options up front so they’re essentially an RVP-or-bust proposition.
Man Utd has definitely struggled to replace guys, which is evidenced most acutely by the fact that they keep rolling Giggs and Scholes out in meaningful matches.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
This has to be a half-season deal for Scholes
And I have to think this is it for Giggs. That’s one of the old guard they actually did find a replacement for (two, actually, in Nani and Ashley Young). Nani has saved himself at United with his play the last 2 or so years. Young is a proven commodity and has probably been England’s most consistent guy internationally the last year or two. But they can’t continually trot Giggs and Scholes out for big matches. It’s not sustainable.
I will always be upset that they wouldn’t pony up the cash for Wesley Sneijder during the summer. He was there for the taking, Inter need the cash, and we wouldn’t pony it up. That’s a signing that, while unable to paper over the incredible defensive frailties we’ve had this year (Vidic, Rio is past it, Evra has been out of form since the disastrous South Africa 2010 campaign, Evans is injured/inadequate, Smalling and Jones were good buys but aren’t ready to carry the load), would’ve made the midfield stronger and been the replacement they’ve been looking for in the middle of the park.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.

Hue seemed to be angling for coach-GM powers and with an actual GM finally coming in, I wasn’t sure if that was going to fly. He didn’t help his case by losing 4 of the last 5, either.
Hopefully the new GM (McKenzie from Green Bay) can instill some actual stability into that organization because, lord, it needs it in the worst way. I don’t think I’ll hold my breath for that, but…

Hellooooooo
College searching. Anyone been to Illinois’s campus? Washington (as in Seattle)? USC?
There is no way that Paki rushes for nine yards. -KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou.
Have not bean to UW but I have for the other three (Illinois, USC, Iowa State)
Illinois campus: Similar to Iowa in that it’s built into a downtown area that survives pretty much on the college. Difference is that it is much dirtier and grungier than IC, and not really in a good way (I appreciate age, this looked like neglect). Champaign comes across as a dirty, crappier version of IC. Memorial Stadium has recent renovations, it’s a decent old basic bowl stadium but the atmosphere lacks severely in fan interest.
USC: Beautiful campus but it’s literally an oasis in the center of the ghetto of Los Angeles. Seriously, don’t go out after dark. There are apartments and shops all within one block of campus and then a warzone outside that dividing line. AMAZING coeds, but you’d better bring money because they care about that. They don’t call it the University of Spoiled Children for nothing. Coloseum is a run-down mess and a bad place to watch a game.
Iowa State: Campus is cut off from the town, so gives you more of that “campus” feel than any of the others listed here or IC. Being cut off from town and with strict 21-only rules besides, parties at frat houses are a very big deal. For all the shit we might fling, it’s really a beautiful campus and a decent gameday atmosphere. Coeds are severely lacking, though.
Depending on your major, the best (large) college campuses in the Midwest IMO are clearly UW-Madison and Michigan. Lincoln, Ames, and Iowa City are also very nice but clearly behind those two. If you’re looking at West Coast, I’d take most of the UC schools over USC any day.

The one caveat I would add to the "beautiful campus" description of Iowa State
Is that it’s true, except for its arts buildings near Jack Trice. Those are the epitome of Soviet concrete design, and their interiors are thoroughly meh.

Thanks for the input.
I’ve been to Iowa State a few times, but I’ve never really had a chance to explore. My older brother (an alum of ISU) always hypes it. Academics are my number one concern, and I’m looking for Computer Science and/or Interactive Media (you guessed it, video games… hey chase your dreams, right?). Basically going off of what I’ve found online so far. My older brother now lives in Seattle and he’s said good things about UWash’s campus so I’ll see.
Out of curiosity, is there a reason you’ve been to all of those campuses?

Tuscaloosa definitely isn’t for everyone, and there are elements of it that don’t appeal to me at all. Maybe I’m being disingenuous, too, because I’ve never been to any of the UCs myself (that they favor Californians isn’t a secret by any means), and never really examined Tuscaloosa in-depth or anything.
Those that complain that Inception was confusing have never seen Videodrome.
Ooh, you have to see the UC schools.
Beautiful, amazing locations. But as you say, you almost have to be from California. Or Asian.

What's the deal with the public CA schools (like Berkeley)?
I’ve heard you can’t apply specifically to any of the CA public schools. You apply to get into the state of CA and then they decide which school you’re best for. I’m almost sure this is high school kids making shit up, but not all the way sure.

I don't know if that's true, but it sure sounds like bullshit.

Also, I've heard that, in general, meal plans are awful for you.
In terms of staying healthy.

That's one of the million little things you'll learn
I wouldn’t want to spoil any others, it’s much more fun for you to fuck it up yourself and learn from it. BTW, that would be my advice for dating as well.

Duly noted.
Many thanks for being my college adviser for the last 30 minutes or so.

'All you can eat'
As a daily meal plan is rarely successful in the staying healthy dept., but you figure it out.

Avoid the obvious: do NOT eat 'all you can' regularly
& watch the beer consumption. Exercise will probably help but I didn’t really discover that for another 15 years.
As the oldest child of an over-protective mom I hit the ground running my freshman year. I believe the mother of my ex-boyfriend even remarked on my weight gain over winter break (In my defense, I’m short so it didn’t take much). That was fun.

I don't think drinking should be a problem.
But you never know what will happen I guess is what most would say. Yay hamsterdam gets to be my personal college panel.

If you’re only biased against Alabama, as in the deep south, you ought to take a look at the Univ of Texas. Austin is one of the best college towns in the country, and a real city. They’ll happily take out of state students, but admission isn’t a cakewalk. The other citified schools I like are many of the DC schools and Boston schools. That’ll keep you busy. (I know I’m replying to you, HawkeyeGirleye, but I’m too lazy to re-type for iamlex).
That's a pretty good summation of at least Illinois and Iowa State - can't comment on USC
Champaign was just a dirt hole. Didn’t care for it one bit. I have been to both Memorial Stadium (pre-renovation) and Assembly Hall. Memorial Stadium was brutal. Bad atmosphere, the fans don’t give a shit (it’s a basketball school all the way)…it just sucks. It’s a potential power with all the talent just up the road in Chicago, but they’re constantly out-recruited there by Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and Iowa (the most recent winner in the Chicago area by one area high school coach). Assembly Hall is another matter – seemed a little dated, but it’s a great place to watch a basketball game. Tough place to play (Iowa hasn’t won there since Dr. Tom’s farewell tour – 1999).
I give Iowa State a ton of shit, but it’s a nice campus – much nicer than Champaign. I do agree with hkobb7’s remark on the art buildings around Jack Trice. They scream Soviet bloc. That entire area of campus is Soviet. The tailgating is fun, but Jack Trice is also meh. I just don’t think it’s a great place to watch a game. It’s pretty amateur. But admittedly, their fans care much more than Illinois supporters. Which, I guess, is a credit to them since they’ve seen a constant stream of shit for the better part of that program’s history.
Hilton, like Assembly Hall, is a great place to watch a basketball game. If Hoiberg ever gets them to be a consistent competitor, Hilton will be a death trap again. It’s loud, people are on top of the floor, they’ve had a decent history of getting quality players to Ames – it will be a tough place to play if Hoiberg develops as a coach and builds some recruiting pipelines (as in, actually recruits his own players instead of using scholarships on one-year transfers). It’s an impressive arena.
Comedy is where the mind goes to tickle itself.
Michigan (Ann-Arbor)? Wisconsin-Madison?
