Wait, Jacobi left?

Seriously? I’ve been out of the loop for a few weeks so I hadn’t heard this. Was it some sort of civil war like what happened at BSD last year? Or did he just take his ball and go home?

To be fair, he was villainized

by a lot of people for things he said (which at the time seemed controversial and extremest but as the facts have unfolded no longer seem so), while they way in which he says things often tick people off, the content of what he says if often very cogent and well thought out. In any event, people didn’t attack his argument, they attacked him personally. Thus he said, I’m out of here.

I agree with your assessment

but Bellanca also has a tendency to wade into places just to pick a fight and show off his moral superiority. And he did that a BSD. I don’t really remember him having such a negative reaction here. Instead, it was more of a “you all are not as outraged as I am, therefore I am leaving!” type thing

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Jan 4, 2012 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

It really was his post at Off Tackle that

kind of brought things to an end. They had no idea where he was coming from and I am guessing because he was not a consistent presence there they didn’t know what to make of his points. BSD was familiar with him but they were wearing rose colored glasses at the time. I don’t think, however, that his back and forth there soured him. He was being stalked by someone at Off Tackle who just went off the rails because of something he said.

Bellanca is kind of like pickled herring, he’s a unique and acquired taste.

by StoopsMyAss on Jan 4, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I think part of it was

that Bellanca made a comparison to an established religion. Those don’t usually go over well, no matter who imparts them.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 4, 2012 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

I think Bellanca really wanted to prove

that no one was more against child rape than him. And he decided to prove it by implying that anyone that donated money to the families were actually child rapists themselves.
When people were pissed instead of giving him a trophy for ‘Most against rape’, he left.
I liked a number of his posts & would like to see him back. BUT, in this instance, he was a dick, thus people treated him like an asshole, then Bellanca reacted like a pussy.
I have no idea how he could have been so surprised & indignant at how he was treated by those he called rape enablers.
I would be shocked if he isn’t an only child of significant privilege.

I like some people over at BSD

but many of the posters over there continue to be batshit insane about this whole thing. They have now taken to referring to it as “The Fake Sex Scandal”. Bellanca was pestering them, but I think he was mostly right.

I also agreed with his take on the indulgences. People giving to charity in the name of Joe Pa was bizarre and felt like an effort to absolve him.

by Lycurgus on Jan 4, 2012 4:55 PM CST up reply actions

I miss his musings. I agreed with pretty much all of what he was saying during the meltdown. However, the BSD community wanted to go through their stages of grief, sooooo, that possibly, maybe, wasn’t the best timed thing. I get his moral outrage at the charity thing – the efforts to give were well intended, but felt kind of, well, icky.

by txhawkeye on Jan 4, 2012 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

To me the best moments at this site are:

a) after a major upset win, in any sport.
b) after a major happening (like rhabdo, for example) that affects the Hawkeyes sports community that reveals a lack of consensus among the readership, and we begin to try to break the event down to better understand it and our personal POV about it.
c) when someone, anyone, posts a unique point of view about some issue that brings a massive amount of discussion to the site.

In two of the three above Bellanca was invaluable. So I miss his comments. I can get bored with the fart jokes pretty quickly. But don’t get me wrong, I love a good fart joke.

Somehow I found myself on the other side of a few arguments with him

Certainly, with my “Fuck Iowa” moment this season, right after the Penn State game. Of course, I was disagreeing with quite a few people those days.

Bellanca's POV is erudite and cogent.

But the whole indulgences post smacked of taking his accrued political capital out for a spin in a showy, “fuck you” sort of way.

// My apologies for mixed metaphor

In the brief time it took me to craft my measured response to him urging him down from the ledge, he deleted the post and vanished into the abyss.

a case of child rape.

Parsimony methods are the easiest ones to explain - Felsenstein

by Lycurgus on Jan 4, 2012 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

And they weren't.

No one at BSD was trying to make light of it.

He seemed angry that people were trying to defend Joe Paterno. He failed to consider the importance of Paterno to Penn State University and Penn Staters, the (rather justifiable) anger that was unleashed by a BoT spokesman foolishly admitting to “not having all of the facts” about Paterno’s role, the shock of a seemingly decent man like Sandusky being accused of such crimes, and, most importantly in my eyes, the simple fact that we truly, as of right now, don’t know enough to judge Paterno. Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t think saying “This is a case of child rape, why didn’t he do more?” is quite enough to prove anyone guilty when the only “facts” we had were from a grand jury presentment which has been found to have been quite faulty in some of its details and is, of course, designed by the prosecution to shape public opinion..

by Lycurgus on Jan 6, 2012 8:03 AM CST up reply actions

That's a mischaracterization.

There’s been like one guy using the term “fake sex scandal” and he’s a Tennessee fan. And even if he is a bit crazy, he’s still done a good service in proving that a) the grand jury presentment was full of holes, b) grand jury presentments are not the whole story and should not be taken as such, and c) we don’t know all of the facts and we shouldn’t act like we know all of the facts.

"The bended knee is not a tradition of our Corps."

by ReadingRambler on Jan 5, 2012 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

I love Bellanca and miss him

He always had a unique and well-defended opinion on matters. He did do it from a VERY high horse more often than not. Not knowing the man personally but based on his statements he was a well-educated and successful individual, so he knew what the hell he was talking about. But the air of superiority doesn’t translate well in a mixed forum.

Look, I like Bellanca too, but he was completely out of line. I like Bellanca because he’s usually rational, instead of emotionally flinging accusations that make little to no sense. His rant against Penn State’s donating to anti-sex abuse stuff struck me as completely ridiculous and wrong. Of course Penn State fans bloody well want to try to make amends for what happened. How many other ways are there for doing such besides donating to certain foundations? Not that many. What are Penn State fans supposed to do? Join the cops?

But that’s what he said at OTE. When Bellanca showed up at BSD on the day the scandal first broke, he was antagonistic, arrogant, and anything but rational. That’s why he ticked people off.

It's clear that everyone wants him back when he's ready

Frankly I don’t care if he ever wants to apologize or realize his stance and posture on the topic was incorrect, everybody has flaws. I’ll take the interesting/insightful from Bellanca with the arrogance/stubbornness any day.

Not sure if it's clear. But it should be.

Bellanca’s contributions like dozens of others are what make BHGP so damn cool. The PSU scandal sucked and no one gained from that except maybe tabloids. So when I see Bellanca clammed up per his thoughts on that crisis I feel like we all lose. Tyger, Chazz, LeftCoastHawk, you Catnuts(will you look over my resume?) HoyaG, are just a few that come to mind who have broadened my perspective as an Iowa Hawk fan by bringing opinions I don’t immediately understand/embrace/consider.

Bellanca! We need you need you back. Soon.

I mostly agree with this.

I am German, and I can tolerate stubbornness to some extent. Arrogance? Well, I never thought Bellanca was arrogant except for when he was being irrational and overly emotional about something (And maybe a bit during his hate affair with RichRod-era Michigan). And Bellanca’s rarely, rarely irrational and overly emotional.
