#HireAdamJacobi

So, this sucks:

https://twitter.com/#!/Adam_Jacobi/statuses/162967663788826625

I'm just a fan, and I haven't been here since the beginning, but I have been around long enough to appreciate Adam Jacobi for his BHGP work, twitter feed, and work at CBS. I also certainly think his talents could be better used than a reporting gig, but it's not like I'm in a position to hire columnists or anything. I hope someone else is though, and if nothing else that the community he contributed to here serves as a massive letter of reference in his favor.

Unless otherwise expressly indicated by BHGP editors, this FanPost is strictly the viewpoint of the author and is not endorsed by BHGP in any way.

From the man

who brought frosting-covered steaks to life.

To the man who brought frosting-covered steaks to the Internet.

This makes too much sense. Therefore, we can dismiss it. Everybody knows our next DC is Scott Paterno.

Why would you fire Nostradamus?

It's not that I'm lazy, Bob, it's that I just don't care

by Colteyes on Jan 27, 2012 2:36 PM CST reply actions

I'm guessing if he'd attributed it to OnwardState he'd've been fine

But I honestly have no idea. I’m guessing CBS didn’t really feel like they knew exactly what to do either, in which case it really sucks that this is what they ended up doing.

The whole thing would have blown over in another week.

None of the outlets I saw that were giving CBS criticism about this, were anything more than small-time alleged bloggers anyway.

But, I fear writing for a large organization is probably like teaching, only without the union. Give them a reason to fire you, and you’re gone.

So...not like teaching?

The idea is

there are a lot of candidates out there to replace you (in teaching, it sort of depends on what content area you are in).

That's a bummer. No closed doors without opened windows, all that.

I hear Jim Rome is Burning ended its run today, so there could be a mid-afternoon opening on tWWL2. You may have to increase your douchebag quotient though.

You could call it “The Jacobean Era is Plagued.” And with that, I call executive producer!

This.

Shitty outcome from a shitty situation, but Jacobi is uber-talented. Just hope he finds time for some home cookin’ while he’s out beating the bushes for his next gig.

That's good news

Hopefully he can find another national gig soon, but in the meantime I would love to see more of him around here.

I'm still in shock that Bobert Zook did Adam in like that

Okay, I didn't even hear about JoePa's death until Monday

so I missed the drama on Sunday.

Could someone please explain to me why this is the result? What, Jacobi said he was dead a few hours before he actually was? Is that really what this is about?

I don't know enough either, I'm not very tuned in to Twitter where a lot of this seems to play out

But I have to say that it looks to me like a very quick hook for a news media that has previously shown they care much more about getting the story first than getting it right. Maybe it’s just too easy to drop the new guy to maintain some perverted sense of journalistic high ground.

I'm kind of hoping somebody besides the editorship can shed some light

Jacobi is smart enough to not say anything bad about CBS, and we probably need more than one degree of separation to make sure it doesn’t hurt his future job prospects

Kinda

He reported that Paterno was dead a few hours too early based on a source that he failed to site or corroborate. A bunch of other people picked up on the story (since it was CBS reporting it), the Paternos had to publicly deny it, and then CBS had to issue a retraction and apology. I feel awful for Jacobi, but it was a high profile mistake and I understand why CBS did what they did. Hopefully Adam gets a second chance somewhere else soon. He screwed up, but to his credit he recognizes that, and he’s a very talented writer who would be an asset anywhere he went.

by NorseHawk on Jan 28, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not completely sure he failed to corroborate it,

but perhaps just didn’t corroborate it with any other really good sources.

After all, radio stations in State College were reporting the death too early as well. All it would take would be a quick phone call or tweet to a friend there, asking “Onward State says Paterno died. Have you heard the same?” “Yes”. Boom, corroboration.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 28, 2012 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but there's still the citation issue

Since Onward State is a publication, if that was his source I gather he should have said so, in which case he’d be fine. But since he didn’t it had the CBS imprimatur, and then others—such as the radio stations—could cite CBS, or “multiple sources” in CBS and Onward State.

What I would like to know is if he wasn’t actually dead at that point anyway. It seems like the family claimed he wasn’t so they could manage the story. As PSU conspiracy stories about Joe Pa and the people around him go I guess that is pretty mild, but it wouldn’t shock me.

by Notclevr on Jan 28, 2012 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

I thought they said they didn't take him off the ventilator

until Sunday.

And yeah, it wasn’t great that he didn’t cite Onward State, but you don’t really have to if you get a couple of other people to say “Yeah, I heard the radio said he’s passed.”

Keep in mind, I would prefer he’d just waited the extra hour or two and then he would not be in this position right now.

Break eggs to make an omelet

To be the first to report a story like this can go a long way in building a reporter/ journalist’s career. So, naturally, you have to take risks sometimes. He’s a good one, I’m sure he won’t be out fo work for long.
