Yes. This was great news.

Top instate talent should be Hawkeyes.

Though I don't think they were going after him originally so it seems they basically

just walked in and took him. I watched him against Bettendorf, he did shitty but had a few good runs. Also he was getting hit in the backfield 70% of the time, kid’s still a beast though and churns his legs.

I think ISU was in first, Iowa just won him over.

AIRBHG be damned!

Feels good to beat ISU in something (other than wrestling).

Yeah, he had verballed to ISU back in April

But I’d imagine the kid wants to play. And White/Woody/Johnson are all returning juniors. The road to RB1 is a hell of a lot shorter in Iowa City right now.

I watched a little video of him earlier today.

I’m not real impressed. He looked a step slow, and that was on the turf in the UNI-dome.

He runs about a 4.6 forty. He’s a 2 or 3 star guy. He runs pretty hard for a guy who is 200 lbs, but I didn’t really see him trucking guys.

Maybe Doyle will turn him into a monster, but otherwise, I’ll be shocked if ever puts up many numbers for the Hawks.

Karl Klug was a highschool RB who many thought didn't have a position in D1 CFB.

Sure, there are plenty of counter examples to Klug.

My happiness here is derived from recruiting the best instate players to become Hawkeyes.

Just watched the vid on Mas Casa's page.

I saw good patience and vision with decent 2nd level speed. Of course that’s not B1G competition but it is 4A.

According to Scout

Montee runs a 4.4 forty. I usually call that pretty quick.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 24, 2012 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

For an RB?

4.6 isn’t fast, is it?

Keep in mind, this is not a personal judgment, as I’d currently be lucky to run a sub-10 forty.

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 25, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, you're right when I looked at last year's combine results.

Then again, Greene ran between a 4.54 and 4.70 so I’m not really sure you need to be much faster than 4.6 to be successful.

by PackerHawk on Jan 25, 2012 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, you can be successful without "premium" speed.

But, Rivals and Scout had Greene at a 4.45 or 4.5 going into college.

Greene ran a 4.72 at the 09 NFL combine. He was also at 227 lbs at that point. And, I suppose we will see Barkley add some muscle/weight.

Coker ran a 4.5 or 4.55 (going into college, I think?)

I meant to provide a link, but the wife hollered for me and I forgot to come back.

Not even the former “fastest man on the planet” could run a sub 4.3 40-yard dash. AND HE WAS ON STEROIDS. The myth of 40 times

by The Mexican't on Jan 25, 2012 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

and Chris Johnson snorted

Yeah, 40 times are somewhat arbitrary, especially as they’re run without pads. Some guys are so much faster in pads than other guys with the same “official” 40 times that it’s quite noticable. Tim Dwight was a mancrush for that reason.

I spent half my life's earnings on wine, women & song. The other half I wasted.

by therealCatnuts on Jan 25, 2012 11:37 PM CST up reply actions

he didn't run a 40 though.

he ran a 100. ask anyone track (seriously, go ahead), but not even a 100 meter sprinter is at full speed at 40 yards

also add in that sprinter’s go off of someone else – they react to the clock
but coaches/scouts go off of the runner – the clock reacts to them.

This is measuring two different things and relying on the ignorance of the reader to not realize that. To me, it’s akin to saying that Albert Pujols can’t hit a softball 400 ft, so of course no college kid could hit a baseball 450 ft.

meh

by tyger1147 on Jan 26, 2012 3:35 AM CST up reply actions

Valid points, sure.

But it also shows that 40 times are incredibly flawed. Reacting to the runner? That’s already a glaring issue.

The largest point of the article, and the argument in general, is that Combine 40 times are a flawed and mostly useless measurement.

by The Mexican't on Jan 26, 2012 8:14 AM CST up reply actions

I always figured

that if it was at the NFL combine, or if it was on Scout or Rivals, that maybe it had been done at a camp or something so that it wasn’t total shit.

But, I could be wrong (not about the combine).

Does anybody know anything about workout supplements?

I started P90x a couple weeks ago, and was looking at picking up some whey protein, but don’t really know much about it. Anybody?

by One Night Stanzi on Jan 23, 2012 8:42 PM CST reply actions

I do p90x religiously, I take just regular whey protein but I also take the shakeology.

Now it depends on if you are just trying to work out or lose some weight? Shakeology is like 120 bucks a month but it’s a full meal, so if you break it down it is really only 4 bucks a day for the meal. If you’re just trying to work out whey protein is probably about all you need.

by clay-born to party on Jan 23, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

I want to lose some weight...

But not go crazy. Like 25ish pounds by the time I’m done with P90. I should be able to keep at that weight, which I would think would be healthier than dropping way down and having to really work to keep at that weight. I had my eye on some Optimum Nutrition whey—it looks pretty good. Ever had it?

by One Night Stanzi on Jan 23, 2012 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Nope I have not, but just make sure you get like a whey protein that is highish quality.

I can’t think of the word but like a protein that actually uses most of it. For instance some are like 23g of protein but crappy stuff your body only takes in like part of that.

by clay-born to party on Jan 23, 2012 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up.

protein

Body can only absorb about 30 grams at a time. Beware of proteins advertising more than 30 grams per serving, its a ploy to make you spend more. Soy protein is essentially pointless. Casein breaks down slowly so its better to take it at night.

Most importantly, calories consumed vs calories burned. You can lose weight on a twinkie diet.

Im not an expert but this served me well back when I was a bit more strapping.

I'm a huge Milwaukee fan and I loved Prince

But holy moley, nine years is really fucking ridiculous. Scott Boras must have thrown in free blowjobs from Detroit’s best disease-free hookers to get that deal to green light. I was thinking maybe four years—five max—on a contract.

I know Prince is "fat" and people don't like him

But how is 9 years for him in the AL a really bad idea? His defense has improved, at least to the point he wasn’t a major liability there (looking at you Weeks and Betancourt, and oy McGehee). Look, he’s “only” 27 and you might only have to DH him for 3-4 years of that deal. As opposed to Pujols who is allegedly 31 and you think will probably be DHing the last 6ish years of that deal.

There was no way that he was going anywhere for less than 8-9years at $20+M per year. Not after Pujols signed his deal and with some of the other money the AL teams have been slinging this year.

by PackerHawk on Jan 25, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but for the next 4-5 years he should be pretty great for them.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 24, 2012 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

There have been some good signings.

They put down money for Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer/Kubel (a few years ago). It just feels like they never quite decide whether they want to rebuild or go for it. They’ll sign a lot of “meh” free agents, moderate reward, higher than average risk. I’m thinking veteran infielders who “play the game right” – we hope, assuming they’re not too old. Pitchers who we think Rick Anderson can fix. We rarely get ‘wow’ though, unless it is someone we already have (morneau/mauer/etc.). That’s good, but I’d rather spend 10 million to get 1 wow and 2 meh, rather than 10 million on 5 meh.

It’s just so weird to look back over the five years, we had 1 (2??) cy young awards, 3 (2?) batting champs, 2 league MVPs, and I think a couple years with a top 5 fielding percentage. You would have thought with those kind of awards that we could have gotten past the ALDS at least once, right?

by TwistConePlease on Jan 24, 2012 10:50 PM CST up reply actions

Yep.

I was kind of disappointed they didn’t pony up for an extra year or two for Orlando Cabrera, but that actually looks wise now.

While he hasn’t put up too many “wow” years, I feel like they’ve had decent production from Pavano.

I’m an A’s fan, also, so I doubly realize that the deck is absolutely stacked against the “little club with smarts.” It’s been pretty amazing to see Tampa do as well as they’ve done recently, but otherwise, it tends to be clubs who spend big who make the world series (Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Angels, White Sox, Tigers). I don’t really expect the Twins or the A’s to be able to spend to compete with them.

I’ll say this: at least the Twins have recently kept some home-grown stars at big money. Its been a long damn time since the A’s did that (and it was for Eric Chavez, who can’t stay healthy).

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

by WaterlooChazz on Jan 24, 2012 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

Pavano has been great!

It’s one of the few good trades that have been made. I think we got him for a TBD minor leaguer. We’ve gotten value from him, lots of innings and mostly good results – wins, low to average ERA.

You’re right about the Twins not being able to be the Yankees/Red Sox/Etc. It’s just that we used to do well because we had good scouts, good fundamentals, made smart trades/signings. It felt like we couldn’t compete because our good players had to leave because we couldn’t keep them. With the new ballpark, we’ve been able to keep a lot of them. And now all the trades are bad (ill-timed, short-selling, “just get of the clubhouse poison” syndrome, seemingly poor talent evaluation) and the defense isn’t as good. It’s like we can either have the ephemeral “Twins Way,” or we can spend money but we can’t have both. Not to mention all of a sudden everyone is injured.

Being an A’s fan would be frustrating too. Why is it that fans of teams with frustrating success rates never stop at just one frustrating team (self-identifying, of course). Oh, also, that reminds me that I haven’t seen money ball yet. Anyone have strong feelings either way?

by TwistConePlease on Jan 24, 2012 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

I also have not yet seen Moneyball, nor read the book.

I’ll probably see the movie before I read the book (which is probably the wrong order, but…)

I’m an A’s fan because they were good as I was picking my “favorite” teams when I was 8 or 10 years old. The Twins were also good at that time, but I like them more because my Dad is a lifelong Twins fan. Most of the big league games I’ve seen have been in the Metrodome.

I’d guess that people might choose to root for multiple “frustrating” teams because they either like to root for underdogs, or just can’t stand the “power” teams (like NYY, Boston, Dodgers, etc).

I think the Twins still have some decent scouts, just maybe not as good as it once was. I think they have some young guys who will hopefully break through in the next couple or three years (I think they still have a pitcher from northeast Iowa named Hermsen, but he hasn’t gone much higher than single-A so far). And hopefully, they’ll still have some current guys that will still be performing at that time, I hope (Mauer, Span, maybe a current pitcher or two).

As long as they stay competitive in the Central, I can’t complain (my A’s haven’t really been competitive in the West for the last three or four years).

We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

I think it was probably a game Texas needed more than ISU. Depending on how many teams the B12 gets, of course. Three are locks (Kansas, Mizzou, Baylor) and K-State is still in pretty good shape. ISU and Texas are both kind of fighting it out for 5th and 6th or so. I think the B12 probably gets 5 teams in… 6 would push it, though.

He never bit me, my landlord's dog does that

Thankfully she has no teeth from chewing at her cage in the puppy mill. Awful history, but it makes it less painful to be bitten, she hates me. Will growl even as I’m petting her and will literally only stop barking sometimes to take a treat from me, chew it, and start barking again.

But after about 3 weeks of that schedule I swear I sensed some resentment that all I did was come home and assert my claim to the bed without any play time or walks or other good stuff.

Plus

characters like Ron, or Dwight in The Office (or Kramer), NEED to be bit/role characters. Their entire appeal as an eccentric only works when they are playing off of the “normal” people who drive the show. Otherwise, it just becomes absurd and stupid (see e.g., whatever the Kramer-centric show that NBC had on for about 10 seconds after Seinfeld ended)

They could go Fawlty Towers with it

But I’m not sure if people would go for that. And of course they’d try to over-do it and drag it out so long that it wouldn’t be funny.

by rupertj on Jan 25, 2012 9:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think it has a little potential

if they don’t focus on the farm more than 5 or ten minutes per episode. They should explore Dwight’s commercial property empire (he now owns the building they work in on the show, I think).

To me, they probably should have just made Dwight the new boss instead of Andy, so that we could see Dwight go really nuts and slowly piss off his co-workers. I’m not a huge fan of Ed Helms, so the “Andy Bernard as manager” era isn’t really working for me.

I was really really hoping that Chip Kelly would go

Sounds like he balked at the last minute. Must have been promised there would be no sanctions at Oregon. Or he realized that the defensive substitution rule that we all learned about in the pros could negatively impact the effectiveness of his offense. Or Uncle Phil bought him an island on the sly. Or whatever else. But still, I was intrigued about how long it would take DCs in the NFL to adjust to the system.
