WE'RE TALKIN' FOOTBALL: B1G BOWL GAMES AHOY
It's January 1 2, which means that the Big Ten is taking over the bowl game landscape. Penn State is currently getting destroyed by Houston on ESPNU. If you care to watch actual competitive football, you have three options:
* Ohio State vs. Florida on ESPN2
* Nebraska vs. South Carolina on ESPN
* Michigan State vs. Georgia on ABC
Here's your thread to talk about any and all of them. The usual open threading rules apply: no links to illegal online streams, no porn, no religion, no politics, no slurs, etc.
Unless otherwise expressly indicated by BHGP editors, this FanPost is strictly the viewpoint of the author and is not endorsed by BHGP in any way.

After throwing an incredible deep ball.
I turned it on at ESPN3 just in time to seem him sacked on 2nd & 9, and nearly pissed myself when that pass was completed.

Also, Sparty just had a swing pass that turned into a safety.

That was a hell of a defensive play by Georgia
You start to appreciate in that same situation Iowa would probably give it to Coker straight ahead…

Nah, its really me
Did you watch any of the Rose Bowl parade?
I always find the stuff that’s happening away from the parade more interesting. Roy Rodgers float with a bunch of horseback riders pulls, and some poor SOB’s horse in the back of herd freaks out and throws the rider to the pavement. NBC’s camera sure pulled away from that fast.

that game was so painful
i was told by the local experts that beer sales would be cut off in the fourth quarter, so with about a minute left in the third, i chugged my remaining beer and sprinted up the stands to the concessions to buy two more. literally the second i got there, the manager comes out and yells “no more beer sales”. sums up the northwestern bowl experience perfectly.
Oh, so you were there. Even cooler.

yeah
i went with a bunch of texas fans, who all wore purple to support NU against those douchebag aggies. we got these cheap general admission seats in the upper deck. midway through the first quarter, we were in the concourse looking to move up a level, and a bowl representative comes up to us and says they need more purple on the northwestern side to make it look better for TV. so we got to move up to the 10th row, 40 yard line. pretty strong.
That's awesome.

Fuck the south (to the tune of Dixie)
Away down South in the land of traitors,
Bulldogs, Cocks, and Alligators,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
Where cotton’s king and men are tackles,
BIG boys will win the battles,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then we’ll all go down to Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must bear and grin
and always mind his Uncle Jim (Delaney),
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.
I wish I was in Jacksonville,
I’d give those southern girls their fill,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
We’ll put the SEC all to rout.
I’ll bet my cleats we’ll whip them out,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then they’ll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must bear and grin
and always mind his Uncle Jim (Delaney),
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.
Oh, may our conference dominate
Forever o’er the southern reprobate,
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
And let our motto ever be —
“For BIG and for Victory!”
Right away, come away, right away, come away.
CHORUS: Then they’ll wish they were in Dixie,
Away, away,
Each Dixie boy must bear and grin
always mind his Uncle Jim (Delaney),
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.
Away, away,
And we’ll all go down to Dixie.

I think that the talent gap has widened between the SEC/Bigten
Since we last played the SEC. I think it will continue to widen
The B1G just wasn't very good this year.
Neither was the SEC, really, outside of their top 3 or 4 teams. Before South Carolina lost their star player, they were considered a national title contender. UGA is a surprise team that was talking about firing their coach after 3 weeks. Meanwhile, Sparty is just as overrated as most imagined, and Nebraska is losing only because they fell asleep with 9 seconds left in the half.
The talent gap is not that wide.

Ironically, their former slave state status is what makes them so good at football.

Yeah, and it's probably a least a little more extreme for a few reasons:
1) Texas mothers probably have more children on average (more conservative people tend to do so, as do Hispanics), and
2) Texans are (I would bet) younger on average (and thus more likely to be of child-rearing age.
But I don’t think any of that has nearly the effect that Texas’ HS football culture has.

But banished now from my native door
They stole me from my Hawkeye parents
And from the team that I do adore
We’ve been losers at dusty Tempe
At hot Miami and the Bayou Plains
At Pasadena and at cursed Ticket City
At all these settlements we’ve been behind the chains
But of all faces of condemnation
as, from higher station, we always fail
Against the SEC I have found no equal
Excessive tyranny each year prevails
For nine long years we were beastly treated
No crystal trophies in our halls we store
Our pride from mocking was lacerated
And oft times tainted with the graft of yore
And many a man from downright obliteration
forsake all hope and courageous deed
And Captain Delaney he had us mangled
All at the goal lines of the SEC
Like the flamboyant Ducks and neutered Longhorns
We were oppressed under the southeastern yoke
Till the NCAA lying there in ambush
Did deal this tyrant his mortal stroke
My fellow prisoners be exhilarated
That all such monsters such a death may find
And when from bondage we are liberated
Our former sufferings will fade from mind

by The Mexican't on Jan 2, 2012 3:53 PM CST up reply actions
I think the difference is that youre not starting in field goal range
You have to have some offense before you could kick

There is no way that Paki rushes for nine yards. -KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou.
It also makes it significantly more unlikely.
Which just drags the game out even further. The point of OT isn’t to punish the teams and extend the game, it’s to find a winner in a fair manner.
by The Mexican't on Jan 2, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions
But defenses have a far more diminished role in the current format.
In my honest opinion.
There is no way that Paki rushes for nine yards. -KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou.
Why? Their job is still to stop the other team.
Their role doesn’t change. If they do their job well they can put the kicker in a long distance FG situation, which is the same thing you’d be hoping for by moving the ball back 25 yards.
Moving it back solves nothing and, probably makes OT worse.
by The Mexican't on Jan 2, 2012 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

But also surprisingly appropriate for a failed OT field goal for the win
as far as failed comment appropriateness goes

Iowa playing in one. Though I am looking forward to the Badgers vs. the Nike Cyborgs.
Sparty needs to finish this so I can turn my attention to the Rose Bowl.

I agree
The history is amazing. Some parts of the press box, as well as the seats, look just shitty, though. Not as bad as the LA Coliseum, though. UCLA is cash-strapped as hell right now, though, and it’s not like the Rose Bowl is horrible (looking at you, old Orange Bowl in the ’90s).

If I could have Iowa model any team's offensive style.
It would be Wisky. I know we’re supposedly similar, but the running back continuity they have is unreal.
