January 19, 1993

BUMP since it's always worth remembering Chris Street. Did you know that the entire Iowa-Michigan game mentioned below is available on Youtube? Part one is below. You can find the rest here:

Thought I'd post this quick:

RIP, Chris Street. 19 years ago today. One of the worst moments in the history of the program. Pretty amazing how the next two weeks unfolded for that team. Came back from a huge deficit (17 points in the final 3 minutes) at Michigan State to win, 96-90, in overtime. Then a few days later, they beat the Fab Five - the eventual national runner-up - in Carver, 88-80. What an emotional two weeks. I remember it vividly.

Take the time to watch all the videos of the Michigan game

It’s lengthy, but incredible to watch.

Is that Michigan State game

up on YouTube or anywhere else? I remember just coming in from playing ball with some guys (which you can do in Arizona in January) to watch the final moments of the comeback and then overtime. An amazing comeback, and winning at East Lansing was rare then, as well.

Thank you, Norm.

I've looked for it and never found it

It’s been on BTN a few times though.

It’s the last time Iowa won a game in East Lansing.

I was only 5 when Chris Street passed away

But from what I’ve heard from my dad and others, he was a one of a kind guy. Those kind of guys make entire athletic programs better. That’s all I really have to say.

I said I have a DRINKING PROBLEM!!

The guy was amazing

I was a soph at the U of I at the time of his death and remember how his passing effected the entire campus.

I was so amazed every time I watched him play.He was always around the ball and his hustle has never been matched…even Bowen didn’t have it…RIP

I was a junior

Downtown IC was an eerie ghost town that night.

Watched the jersey/#40 retirement ceremony this am & got all teary. Started re-reading the 1993 LA Times article that someone linked on twitter while sitting at my daughter’s violin lesson & had to stop. He was just special.

I was at the ‘92 NCAA 2nd Round game vs Duke. We were, um, not good in that game & Chris fouled out somewhat early in the 2nd half. The game was in Greensboro, NC & was filled with Duke fans all doing typical ’Cameron Crazies’ type things. He absolutely refused to to give them the satisfaction of allowing them to finish their ‘SEE YA’ send off for him by not fully sitting down till the game restarted & they (finally) lost interest. It was awesome.

RIP #40. May the continued improved play of this year’s team make you smile.

Yeah!

I remember watching that game on tv and thinking yeah, dude, nice…he gave them a nice, silent F U.

Oh, good!

I’ve always wondered if any of that made it to the ‘viewers at home’. SO glad it did. It was great theater.

ill never forget this

i remember my dad waking my brother and myself up before church and him telling me that he had died. I even remember watching these games with my dad after that. I was 6.

Me too

I was 6, and I remember I had never seen my parents (both UofI alumni) so upset. This is probably my first Hawkeye Basketball memory – being in the room with my brother while my parents were watching the news and having the whole mood shift.

Still remember where I was when I heard this

I was at home on the phone, and the news was on. My mom suddenly said “Did they just say Chris Street died?” I called up several people afterwards to see if they had heard. The Mich. St, and Michigan, games that followed were simply amazing. They said the Michigan game was the loudest Carver had ever been. That still might be the case. Unfortunately, Iowa suffered the most heartbreaking loss I’ve ever seen in the Illinois game that followed Michigan.

Is that the game where Andy Fucking Kauffman

caught a lengthy of the court pass, took a dribble, gave a forearm to whoever was guarding him, and nailed a leaning 25-footer? All in about 1.5 seconds?

And Lou Hensen…what a fucking asshole.

Illinois-Iowa. That was a real rivalry in the late 80s-early 90s. It’d be nice to hate them again.

You got it

It was Kenyon Murray that got the forearm shove. Had they won it would have been their first win at Illinois in seven years. Also, the play before that was wild. It was tied, and Acie Earl missed a wide open shot. The ball was tipped in the basket by Illinois forward Deon Thomas which put Iowa up by two. He was in the center of the recruiting controversy between Iowa and Illinois. Bruce Perl (yes, that one) from Iowa recorded a conversation where he said that Illinois offered him a car. This got Illinois put on probation.

Wait... I think I must've been at that game.

For some reason, I remember the night he died perfectly but have very little memory of the days/weeks following which is both sad & frustrating. Even had bball tx & i can’t for the life of me remember attending any specific games. That Illinois game, tho, I’m pretty sure I was dating a grad student at U of I then & he got tickets for us. All I remember is leaving Assembly Hall extremely disappointed.

Ugh, U of I. Ugh, Lou Henson. Ugh, Deon Thomas. Ugh, Bruce Perl. (What a story that was!)

Fuck Deon - His pro career in Tel Aviv was stellar.

“twas a good season…those were the days. We beat ISU, UNI & Drake by over 70 points combined that year. At least we beat Duke the following year OK fine, got beat the following year too…at least they took them down in Hawaii two years later then.

Metallica concert in IC the night of the MSU game.

Came home and tried to watch the MSU game but everyone was jumping around and yelling the ending which kind of spolied it (kids.).

I was at that Michigan game (front row tickets, heh heh heh). It was louder than the recent Metalica concert. Just unreal atmosphere, from opening tip to final gun.

I was a senior at Iowa. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was at the aforementioned Illinois game (my worst college basketball memory next to UNLV and Northwestern St.). I saw the end of the MSU game, and I would have been at the Michigan game but had a family commitment that weekend. I did see every second on TV and I don’t remember ever hearing Carver sound louder. The emotion must have been through the roof.

On a more personal note, when I was a sophomore I lived in Quad and Chris Street was a freshman and lived on my floor. I’m not going to say I knew him super well (I didn’t), but, living on the same floor, I knew him well enough that he’d say hello when I saw him around campus and whatnot. Every interaction I had with him he was friendly, seemed humble, and didn’t put out a “I’m a basketball star, I’m better than you” vibe in any way whatsoever. In fact, 2 years after he lived on my floor he’d still always say hello when I saw him around. As an unathletic 5’11 guy it always impressed me that he remembered me and that he did that. It’s a small thing for sure, but, I like to think it’s indicative of the kind of guy he was (and certainly consistent with everything I heard).

Living on that floor I also have some dynamite Phil Chime stories, but, that’s for another day. Long live #40. A true Hawkeye in every way.

I lived in the little apartment building next to the Lambda Chi house & across from Old Brick.

There were maybe 10 apartments in the whole building & only 2 per floor. Keno Davis lived in the other apartment on our floor & James Winter lived above us. I didn’t move in till the year after Chris died but he & James had been roommates that year. Rumor had it James never changed the outgoing message on their answering machine because Chris’s voice was on it. Broke my heart.

I was a junior and attended that game.

We stormed the floor and the Michigan team was still trying to make their way off. I ended up standing next to one of them. My neck still hurts from looking up, up, up to see him. It was such a sad time, but so awesome to watch the team win one for Chris.
