weird to think of myself as a glass half full person

Because I’m usually a pretty bitter human being. But when it comes to Iowa sports, I prefer to think of things like ‘The Catch’ or Daniel Murray kicking Penn State into submission, or the 8 play goal line stand over my alma mater (little bittersweet there). DRUNJIFORNICATION

by SaturdayMorningKegStanzis on Jan 18, 2012 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

It's not possible

without adding something like benzene. Which is toxic. 95% EtOH:5% water is an azeotrope; the boiling point of 95% EtOH is essentially the same as 100% EtOH, so you can’t boil off anymore. So the most you could get to is 95% without adding poison. You could drink that, but it wouldn’t taste very good.

That said, I’ve got a bottle of Popcorn Sutton’s moonshine sitting on my desk and it is delicious.

Got it as a gift. I guess Popcorn killed himself rather than go to jail for making moonshine.

by Ratface McDougal on Jan 18, 2012 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

That's correct

Popcorn did kill himself rather than go to jail. Moonshiners was on discovery or some channel like that. The series just ended a week ago or so. It was interesting. They had footage of Popcorn. He seemed like quite a character. How is the ‘shine? I’ve never had moonshine before. Legal or not. I always assumed it didn’t taste like much, except burning.

Sure Lisa, some magical animal.

by IowaPharmer on Jan 18, 2012 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

It's really quite good

It smells like buttered popcorn, which is kind of weird. Perfectly clear. It’s only about 40% alcohol, so the alcohol burn is similar to bourbon or rye. It’s straight cornmash. It tastes a little sweet, but there’s of course none of the flavors you would get from aging in oak. Quite smooth, smoother even than Maker’s or Knob Creek. I can’t drink a ton of it at once, but as a change of pace it’s quite nice.

But every time I pour a glass, I still expect it to hurt. It just looks like it should.

by Ratface McDougal on Jan 18, 2012 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks

I think I’ll give it a try. After my current bottles of Templeton and ‘94 Glenrothes. Sounds good. I’m surprised at the proof. I just assumed it would be proofed in the 160-190 range. Check out the show if you can. It’s entertaining to say the least.

Sure Lisa, some magical animal.

by IowaPharmer on Jan 18, 2012 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

It's basically like bourbon without the barrel aging

I am required to love Templeton, and I do. How is the Glenrothes? I haven’t gotten into Scotch. Unlike bourbon, here are so many different flavors, and I just can’t drop $XX for a bottle I might hate. I’ll order a glass when I go out, but I can never remember what it was. I know I don’t care for the peaty ones, though.

by Ratface McDougal on Jan 18, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

Glenrothes is fantastic

I don’t like peaty scotch either. The ‘91 Glenrothes is better, but I can’t find it anymore. Don’t bother with the special reserve, or just get JW. I know what you mean about plopping money down for something you won’t like. I’d bet you’d like Glenrothes if you don’t like peaty scotch.

Sure Lisa, some magical animal.

I had a bottle of Buffalo Trace white rye a few weeks ago

Hahaha!

I watch call of the Wildman with my kids, and he(the Turtle Man) caught some opossums in the Buffalo Trace distillery. It was funny. Apparently I must watch too much TV though. Is it smooth or harsh? Sounds interesting.

Sure Lisa, some magical animal.

by IowaPharmer on Jan 18, 2012 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

It's pretty smooth for how strong it is

and, apparently, for the potential turtle additives. I enjoyed drinking it, but I can’t drink as much of it as any Bourbon, or other Rye. Part of that is the alcohol %, but also because of the flavor. For me it was great for sipping, but not for more than 1 or 2 refills.

by TwistConePlease on Jan 19, 2012 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

Either that

or its got toxic benzene in it. Given it’s Louisiana, I’m gonna guess you’re 50/50 on that.

Eventually I decided that I had to drop some of the early sets of bone & scales until I bought the house. Now that I own the house, it’s easy to hoard, fast travel and unload.

by The Mexican't on Jan 18, 2012 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Actually

My biggest problem is that I have so many freaking quest items that I can’t drop or sell, even when I try, so I’m always close to overencumbered .

And Lydia died when I was like level 3. I always get annoyed with companions anyway, so I haven’t bothered to find someone to take her place.

It's impossible to understand.

Every time a top tier team loses I feel better about Iowa’s chances, but then I’m frightened by the possibilities of a loss to a team like Nebraska.

by The Mexican't on Jan 18, 2012 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

We will definitely lose a game to the jNW/PSU/Nebraska troika.

And quite probably a couple.

It’s a tough, tough league this year. Those road wins we got in Minny and Wisco look better and better.

THEREFORE:

which will feature Paul Chaney Jr and Lee Gray.

I looked it up and apparently the players get $225/game if they win and $200/game if they lose. It’s a 14 game schedule.

In case your calculator isn’t working, that’s not much.

I had a buddy who signed up for semi-pro football for a Waterloo team a few years ago.

It actually cost him a fair amount between pads and travel and everything, plus they got paid $0/game for wins and $0/game for losses.

He played one year, and was bruised up and sore as hell after every game. I think he’s glad he went out and did it for a year, but I don’t think he’s planning on going back any time soon.

I played for four years in a league like what HawKCP described.

It IS incredibly fun, but it can also be incredibly disorganized, depending on who you play against/for. And, of course, the chance of serious injury looms.

I think there are a lot of factors too.

He was a DE, which is about as nasty as it gets.

Also, the Cedar Valley Vikings were by far and away the worst team in the league when he played (probably 5 years ago). I believe a few of the teams in the league had players who actually did get paid to play and were true “semi-pros”. Kane County was one of those teams, and he got knocked out in that game.

supposedly live in St Louis and Chicago and will be traveling to CR for games. Not sure how the practices work. It’s a nice idea to bring a team to town but it sounds like it’s going to be kind of a joke.

The sad part is that they are trying to get $20-$30 per ticket, even for season ticket packages.

Almost all of my non-sports tv watching is done through Netflix. I pick a series and watch it all the way through and then move on. I recently started watching The Borgias. I was really looking forward to it. I think it sucks.

The best comparison I've heard for BB is when Matt Ufford said it was like Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"

When you’re watching Breaking Bad you know you’re taking in something that will be remembered as an all-time great, but it sometimes feels like work.

I love the show, but can completely understand why someone else may not find it interesting.

I completely gave up on Boardwalk this season.

The wife and I watched the first episode of S2 and then never went back. Not necessarily because we lost interest, but because Homeland became appointment viewing and BE episodes just piled up on the DVR. Eventually we decided we couldn’t catch up and deleted them all.

by The Mexican't on Jan 18, 2012 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

It has lots of great episodes, but it also has lots of bad ones.

It took me a while to warm up the idea of Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson. Not because I had a picture of what Nucky Thompson should look like, but because it’s fucking Steve Buscemi playing a gangster.
