Iowa's back in action today against Northwestern, in a meet that features several rematches from Midlands. It's also a meet that, on paper, Iowa should win rather comfortably.

Short story time
I grew up a basketball player. In my highschool and college years not only did I never go to a wrestling meet, I made fun of wrestlers on a regular basis. “Look at those guys wearing spandex and grabbing each other.. derpaderp.” Due to my obsession with BHGP and RossWB’s writing I have started to pay more attention to the sport. First, just Hawkeye stuff but yesterday I went to a highschool tournament here in Iowa. Watching wrestling live is an absolute blast. I have started to pick up on rules and strategy enough to understand what is going on and watching the kids from my school of choice compete was an absolute blast. I really wish the sport got some more mainstream attention because I do not have Mediacom or Big ten network and as a result rarely get to see the Hawks in action. Keep the updates coming in this thread, i’ll be following. Thanks to Ross and all the other wrestling fans for helping make my “conversion” possible. (still love hoops but seriously Wrestling is a fantastic sport)

I’m assuming that they start at 125 and work their way backward until the coaches can agree on a starting weight. Is that right?

If there’s no mutual agreement between the coaches, they go to a random draw. Iowa basically always wants to start at 125 (for obvious reasons), so if the other coach disagrees they go to a random draw. I’m guessing that’s what happened here.

and that during Alford’s tenure he had a clause in his contract that guaranteed him so much camp money. Since his camps didn’t bring that much in they were dipping into the wrestling camp money to pay Alford so wrestling took their camps off campus in order to keep all the profits.

Their expenses aren’t huge, but they’re still big enough. And wrestling’s only source of revenue is ticket sales, unlike football and basketball (including women’s) that have bring in significant TV revenue

There isn’t a team in the country that worries me going into the national tournament. You just cannot tell how these guys will be wrestling in March. Iowa has as good of a chance as anyone. They need to work hard to qualify all ten.

Iowa needs to use PSU's blueprint from last year.
We need McD, Ramos, Marion, and DSJ to make the finals. Then we need some decent runs out of Evans, Lofthouse, and Telford. Anything we get out of Kelly, Wagner, and Gambrall will be gravy, IMO.
So much of it is going to come down to matchups with Evans, Lofthouse, and Telford. I think if McD, Ramos, and Marion simply wrestle to their capabilities, they’ll be fine and go far. That’s possibly true with DSJ as well, but I want to see how he does against some decent competition this year before I hop fully on that bandwagon. But the other guys are going to need to get some luck with the draw — and probably a few upsets as well.
