It must be terrible to have Lukaku, Mata, and Anelka on the bench.
Everyone fails. The successful learn from their failures. I just wish we'd quit giving ourselves so many learning opportunities.

It's slightly disgusting
As is the ManCity bench. If either club finishes outside of the top 4 it has to be considered a serious disappointment.

Not too shabby to have Chicharito/Welbeck, Valencia, and Berbatov on the bench, I imagine.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Hey, you've got, um, Kuyt. And Ngog. And like a dozen midfielders I can't remember.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Ngog wil be shipped off to Bolton soon
Liverpool’s bench consists mostly of up-and-coming midfielders. Once Gerrard is healthy, Henderson will be relegated to squad play. Downing has played well enough that he may stay in the first eleven, so Kuyt may end up as a bench player moving forward. Until the European money comes in, Liverpool just can’t afford to be as deep as the other big 4.

I wonder how Gerrard will fit into this lineup.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
They'll slot him right in.
Charlie Adam will probably be asked to play a more defensive position and Henderson will stay on the bench. The real issue will be whether Meireles gets his minutes once Gerrard returns. He looked to be in great form before his collarbone injury on Wednesday, so we’ll see.
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, something has to give.
Henderson and Meireles seem like the most likely bets.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah.
Meireles and Suarez really seem to play well together, and Gerrard may be reaching the end of his line. I just hope Dalglish does enough to keep Meireles in the squad going forward. Letting him go would be a mistake.

I wasn’t paying enough attention because last night’s thread got out of hand, but he did throw a really nice TD at the end of the 3Q
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions
I ended up watching most of the third quarter.
Had a few really nice passes, a few crappy ones. The OL protection was occasionally decent, which helped matters.
I’m biased, of course, but I’d rather have Stanzi as QB2 than Tyler fucking Palko.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
A few commenters over at Arrowhead Pride are hoping that they'll give Ricky the start in pre-season week 4
Just to see what he can do with first team help. I’d love to see it and think Stanzi would do well with a little protection and players like J.Baldwin and “Double” Dwayne Bowe to throw to. Plus, he’d almost certainly throw a TD to Moeaki.
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions
That would be nice to see.
You’d think the Week 4 game would have a lot of Stanzi and Palko.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah. I can't imagine Cassel playing for more than 1 or 2 series.
I don’t know how many teams keep 3 QBs on the roster, but it seems a bit foolish with the 3rd QB rule, so it could be a very big day for Palko/Stanzi.
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Thing with Erasure
is as good of music as they made, it was probably Vince Clarke’s third best band of the 80s. Speak and Spell by Depeche Mode wasn’t all that good, but did have Just Can’t Get Enough, which is still an iconic hit, and Upstairs at Eric’s by Yaz is just top to bottom solid.
"I play for Penn State, we don't celebrate after TDs." - Penn State's Derek Moye, on being asked to act like he's celebrating a TD during a BTN shoot.
True
and taking whole albums into consideration, I think the only one that would qualify is the Innocents. It also doesn’t help that there’s so much overlap. It’s not like (for example) The Who or the Rollings Stones, long lasting bands cranking out music. With some of the British synth pop stuff you had bands losing and gaining people all the time, and trying things out. Made for some great music.
Thinking about it, I’d throw Gary Numan in there, not for any album in particular, but Are ‘Friends’ Electric? is a great song

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
I don't think he'll KO Okami
but I don’t see how he could possibly lose. Which sucks, cause I’m tired of him and he’s a showboating dickhead. I wanna see the St Pierre – Silva super fight so we can all watch GSP dissect his ass and tear him apart.
Templeton Rye'd the Lightning.
by Smokin Herb Grigsby on Aug 27, 2011 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't know that GSP could dissect A Silva.
Silva’s only a dickhead because he’s got no real competition. He absolutely erased Belfort without much showboating. That said, Okami is a lot like Sonnen so Silva may have his hands full.
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I couldn't disagree with you more.
And I definitely don’t think GSP could tear him apart. The reach and size advantages Silva has are massive.
Not to mention that he’s pretty good on the ground even if GSP does take him down.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
I'm a huge GSP fan, so I'm very biased of course...
but GSP never takes time off during matches (at least since the Serra fight), which Silva does all the time. GSP conditioning is probably the best in the game, and it’s almost a sure thing that he’d just get Anderson on the ground without eating too many knees and pummel him. He’s never fought a guy with a ground game that even comes close to GSP’s (I’m taking about strikes on the ground, not submissions), and that’s where GSP just annihilates people.
You’re definitely right about the size advantage, but Georges is just so damn good right now and prepares so well for every fight that I think he’d be able to take Silva down.
Templeton Rye'd the Lightning.

"and it’s almost a sure thing that he’d just get Anderson on the ground without eating too many knees and pummel him. "
Yeah, I wouldn’t go that far.
Silva walks around at 220-230 and has significant reach advantage. I think GSP would need a lot of time to develop enough size to counter that and it’s hard to say what that would do to his quickness.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
Yeah. Silva is more likely to move up to 205 than stay at 185 and continue to trounce everyone.
The talk of the superfight is great, but it’s probably unlikely. A Bones-Silva fight is probably more likely.
by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions
That could be a really fun fight.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

by The Mexican't on Aug 27, 2011 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions
I dunno.
Bones is huge and quick, has good wrestling, and attacks from incredibly unorthodox angles. It would be really interesting.
"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"
I think confidence,
while at times dickhead-ish, is just a huge asset for A. Silva.
Now, if he ever let’s it go so far to make him ignore threats to the point that someone like GSP or Jones could get a few big hits on him, then it becomes a problem.
Until then, Silva knowing he is the baddest mother in that level of MMA is just a huge help to him, because he has the talent (and enough smarts) to go with it.
I don’t like GSP, but if I were him, I’d certainly have a nagging notion in the back of my mind that Silva is bigger and possibly better than me, if I was GSP entering that fight.
We will become more intensity!!! --What Reading Rambler thinks Tom Brands should do.

I fully expect him to land some shots

Today is not my day.
I have a deadline on Monday, and I couldn’t find my little wire clip thingie that holds books open. Unless I have that thingie I have to hold the comic book open in my left hand and set it down every two seconds while I type/translate. That ends up taking me ten times longer.
So I went to Office Max and went up to a guy who works there and was like, “Hi, do you have a book holder opener thingie??” and he’s like “Probably not, but did you try next door?” and I looked at him blankly and was like “Uhm, TJ Maxx??” and he goes, “Uhh no, Barnes & Noble.”
Then I wanted to kill myself.
But they had some giant wire versions that doesn’t work nearly as well as my little one, but I bought two anyway. Uggh.
by stanzi's ex-girlfriend on Aug 27, 2011 2:03 PM CDT reply actions
Japanese comic books are small but fat.
So if they’re not clipped up at the top they won’t stay open, because of the weight of the other pages.

I translate from Japanese to English.
But I can actually type stuff out way faster than I can talk. And yeah, since I have to type out a lot of Japanese names, the time wasted correcting and proofreading would eat into my work time a lot.
With comic books, there’s a lot of weird formatting with the typed-out scripts that has to be done, and I wouldn’t even know how to talk that out. Weird margins and shit.

he made two of the cast cry filming that one
to get the wife looking scared and stressed out enough he constantly threw massive angry tantrums whenever the actress made any mistake. Apparently by late in the filming her hair was starting to fall out from the stress. He made the actor playing the chef guy cry by doing 60ish takes of the scene where he gets axed in the ribs.

“We don’t even know him, we ain’t vanilla, man, we ain’t no simple offense. So for him to come in here and be the starter, I don’t see it. I think that’s a step back.”
“Who says Kerry’s going to be the starter? Just because we bring him in doesn’t mean he’s the starter. He’s got to learn too, right? Unless they gave him a playbook months ago, he’s got to learn too. He’s going to have some studying to do. I’m not sure how he is with the books, not sure about Penn State’s education, but he’ll have to do some studying.”
“I don’t care who you are, I mean I’m not going to let anyone just come in here and just push someone aside like you’re that dog now, you know what I mean?”

Reggie Wayne owes his career to the fact that the Colts played a gimmicky offense for the first several years of his career
Also, he has totally been replaced by a third world immigrant who went to a D3 school. That’s all I have to say about that.
Collins is no Manning, that’s true, but he’s very, very close to being in the top 25 all time in wins, yards, TDs, and completions, and in the top 10 in two of those categories.

They aren't regular bones (with marrow and such)
They are almost entirely calcium. They technically get bigger everyday b/c they lay down a new “ring” everyday. In the winter they get close together and form an “annuli” that we can see. You can count them as 1 annuli per year.

They’re playing 7v7 & had 11 on the team- 1 moved this summer (AFTER paying nearly 2K to play), 2 were out of town, 1 has a broken foot & another stayed home with a fever leaving us with exactly 7 players. One of the 7 got lost & didn’t show till halfway thru the 1st half so they played 6v7! Lost 9-0 but didn’t get scored on during the time they were a player down.

If a coach can keep the kids from swarming to the ball it’s a completely reasonable children’s sport.

Well, the 5 y/o had his very 1st game today
& they’d had 1 whole practice so you can pretty much imagine how successful that was. Fairly sure that’s the reason they play 4v4. It was HYSTERICAL. At one point, my child ran up the field, away from the ball/all the players with his arms out like an airplane. Just because. After that, my husband stuck him in front of the goal (technically, it’s ‘no goalies) & just made sure he was paying attention whenever the ball headed his way. Probably one of those ’it’s only funny when it’s your kid’ things but, hey, it’s Hamsterdam!

I think I'm addicted to Sporcle.
Thanks, whoever posted that one the other day (on MLB HR hitters).
this is a fun one
http://www.sporcle.com/games/teff/ncaa-d-1-champions-big-4-sports-1961-2010
although if you dont know much about college hockey, you might not find it very fun
I did that one, and got most of them.
It helps that there aren’t many hockey programs. It was baseball that got me — and some of the old basketball champions.
the thing with baseball
is you can just guess big southern schools and get most of them.
if you dont pay attention to college hockey, theres a ton of schools you’ve never heard of.
also, they need to fix the 2011 hockey champion. i spent about 5 minutes trying to get it to work.
What versions were you trying?
I just typed in “minnesota duluth” and it took it

A beer.
Made by the Saint Arnold brewery. Many factors went into choosing the name. The beer does not taste like motor oil or freshly cut grass, so the name “lawnmower” must originate from another factor. There is another beer called “Weedwhacker”, which the store was out of. Many factors go into choosing a beer to drink. Randomness is one such factor.

Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong, dark beer that defies style characteristics- brewed with pure maple syrup from the Calagione family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown on the Grossman “farm” at the brewery in Chico, CA.
Best part? 10.0% ABV. YUMMY.

There’s a place in Dubuque called Beanie’s Cafe. It’s only open from like 9pm-10am. It caters to drunks and business people. It’s a great idea. You can get some awesome food at 2am if you “need” it.

Actual business people
It is right downtown near the bars and the office buildings (that’s how Dubuque rolls). So they get the drunks all night and the business people roll in around 7-8 and eat before going to work. It’s brilliant. I haven’t been in a couple of years, I hope it’s still there

I do literary translation which is the most fun to do.
Least fun is probably technical translation, translating patents or medical shit. That pays better than what I do, though.
I primarily translate comic books, just recently began video games, and occasionally do novels. It gives me a lot of creative license which is fun.
The least fun part is the ridiculous deadlines. Sometimes I have two weeks notice to translate a 200 page comic.

I guess I could see that
I saw a 60 minutes interview a couple of weeks ago and his regular voice is worse. He really does fall into the category of people who are too good at 1 thing and the rest of life suffers. He has a box of random notes and scribblings (full legal pads) of thoughts and rhymes. He says it almost drove him insane until he learned how to use it. He’s pissed when people say you can’t rhyme with “orange.” He went on to break it down different ways to rhyme it 5 or 6 times.
This song is one of my favorites.
He is legitimately talented

I don't understand the logic of picking a pro team over a college team.
Why is that better? For many people there is a connection with college teams that comes from having attended school there or having someone in their family that did. I think in the case of Iowa part of it is the lack of a pro team but I think Iowans take pride in the university, even ISU people (though many would never admit it).
I have no connection with any pro team so I’m just trying to understand your comment.

I'm a Browns fan because I married a girl from Cleveland
But that’s all. Growing up in NW Ohio during the mid 90s-early 00s, it was hard to get into pro football. Teams that could’ve been geographically justifiable were Detroit, Indy, Cleveland, and Cinci, and none was within a 100 min drive, 2 were across state lines, and all four were awful.
In contrast, Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame were all a day drip away (not to mention OMHR, a handful of MAC schools, and MSU and Indiana were both possible) and consistently very good.
That’s why I’ll always be much more of a college fan than pro fan. I’ll watch pro ball, but I just cheer for the Big Ten dudes I enjoyed watching in college

B/c I don’t remember any of the Golden Girls being Jewish and that is the American culture I most strongly associate it cheesecake.
I have always found it interesting that brisket is now mostly thought of as a Texas BBQ meat and its Jewish heritage is forgotten or not know. I told my brother-in-law from TX brisket is Jewish and he didn’t believe me.
by Carfino'sWay on Aug 28, 2011 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, it's both.
In fairness, brisket is just a cut of meat. However, it has very different meanings to different cultures. Most of the brisket I encounter up here is part of a braised Jewish meal. When visiting my Texas in-laws, brisket is the only kind of acceptable BBQ.
Here, more on cheesecake’s role in modern Jewish culture.

I'm partial to
either plain cheescake, or raspberry-flavored. I usually tolerate cherry or blueberry on the cheescake.
I’m trying to remember if I’ve tried the key-lime type. If I can’t remember, that either means I have not tried it or it wasn’t that good.
I must have it all pretty cold, though. If it has sat out more than ten minutes or so, I don’t like it nearly as well.

I love that Arsenal had already been tortured, gutted, and discarded in a ditch, but then Man U decided to drive past one more time and have another whole go at it.
OH HEY NEATO WHAT A FUN SOCCER MATCH SO SORRY I WAS AT WORK!

Where do you think they go from here, out of curiosity?
Oh, they're still far too talented to finish outside the top 8, more likely top 6.
This has been inarguably a terrible spell for Arsenal but the reality is that they just lost their best two players to transfers in the last two weeks without having brought anyone in. Add to that the fact that they were missing multiple starters while having to play at the best team in the EPL and it was a recipe for disaster. I trust Wenger (no, they’re not firing him…yet) to get somebody out of all of this and for a young side to grow. Honestly, it wouldn’t shock me one bit to see the Gunners finish in the 5-7 range in England yet make it to the quarters of the Champions League. It’s kind of how they roll.

I do think you've got a point up there, though.
Once this squad gets healthy they’ll be dangerous. A place in Europe is still likely, though Champions League next year may require some help. Both squads from Manchester are terrifying, Chelsea are still strong, and I’m too big of a homer to count Liverpool out of the top 4.
by The Mexican't on Aug 28, 2011 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not panicking...yet.
They are very young and very shorthanded. If they can get healthy and remain ineffective then it’s time to start over. But one game does not make a season. Remember, Iowa lost to Iowa State in 2002.

If the Longhorn Network is going to work
They need to lock down some third tier football rights. That’s where the subscriptions are at, and that’s where the “bundled with basic cable package” money is going to come from. That’s one of the reasons the BTN saw so much profit – it’s bundled with a lot of the basic cable packages in Pennsylvania and Ohio, which ends up getting the Big Ten a cut of every basic cable subscription in those states.
If they played their cards right, they could probably get third tier rights for the Big XII south if the Big 12 decides to go for the 3-pac expansion.
I have the same fashion sense as Tom Arnold.
I think this is why Rutgers is not off the table
The Big 10 doesn’t need Rutgers to be good. Those cable subs are where its at. Imagine if they added UConn!

I’m playing NCAA ’12, and Coker had a stupendous season, one year removed from winning the Heisman. He rushes 202 times for 3639 yards and 56 TDs (yes, I love to run up the score), and fails to win the Heisman again. The winner, by the way, had 179 rushes for 1187 yards and 20 TDs.
HE HAD THE X-FACTOR!
by the way, love how Coker becomes unstoppable for me by his Junior year.
